I'm so jealous, we went for a walk there last year and loads of people were riding. When I get my box in a few months time it's one of the first places that I want to go. Fancy showing me round when we're mobile?
Love to. I should warn you though that it is easy to get lost there as there are few visual references and the paths criss-cross. I always take a 1:25 000 map and compass, plus a pocket GPS as backup!
I used to teach Duke of Edinburgh's Award navigation to sixth form students, that was the reason that we went over there. Not getting lost will give us more time for cantering

I wouldn't mind a guided tour of Cannock Chase too. Any room for a little one?
I used to navigate in the RAF and am the only person at my yard to not get lost there (touch wood)! Cantering depends on the ground state as last summer it was baked hard. It should be alright tomorrow though.

Come too if you like. We might as well bring picnics. My friend Jo and I have sat in the Punch Bowl car park picnicing (inc. Pinot Grigio) whilst the boys chomped on hay nets.

Does it have it's own climate? Nowhere near us was baked hard last year. Swampy yes, baked no

Yes it does. Our XC and woods were like a swamp, but the Chase was like the Gobi desert. It is very sandy and very high, so rain has no effect on it. There is a lovely ford through a stream near where I park, which is great for building a horse's confidence in water.

My standards must be a lot lower then lol!

Whispers....we went back to his house when his wife was at work! I even met his mum once, who called to the house unexpected. I had to pretend to be a colleague from work picking some costings up.
the Chase backs on to both Rugeley and Stafford and is very good for hacking
we regulary go for 3 hours at a time and the boys love it. Even in the summer though you can find places to have a canter/gallop as there are a lot of peat tracks that still have plenty of give in them. Wish we could go but am taking a friend to Eland Lodge today
However weather permitting we are going next weekend if Somerford is not open.

We had a great hack today and he behaved very well with all the walkers, cyclists and other horses about. 1 woman was hiking in stiletto snakeskin boots - different... 2 walkers almost walked in to us, although you'd think that a 15'3 horse and rider in a yellow jacket were fairly easy to see.
I hope it wasn'y your box at Eland today that was parked in my space when I got back! I had to leave my lorry keys with the YO to move it later.
I am planning on Somerford in 2 week's time. Is the XC schooling field closed then?
Ah then you have a green box? No don't worry we weren't parked in your spot as we were just at the top of the drive opposite the outdoor school. I think I saw you but wasn't sure if it was so didn't want to make a prat of myself by saying hello if it wasn't you
So glad you a good time, the chase is fab for riding on isn't it
where do you park then?
Don't know about Somerford but am going to ring them tomorrow as took the boys for a short hack round Rodbaston grounds today and very nearlly got carted over one of the fences as Pidge told me quite clearly he should be going over it and not round it
That is my lorry. I was hard to miss as I had my hi-viz yellow fleece on.
This time I parked at the Punch Bowl, as it easy to find our way back to. I have also parked by the Rifle Range. The car park was packed though and I could barely find enough space to park the lorry, with space at the side to tie up/mount and at the back to get he ramp down.
Can you let me know what Somerford say as their website claims that the XC fences are usable all year around.
I was pottering past in a bright red coat on my way to the shop
If you're up for it one we'll meet on a quieter car park and we'll show you round the chase if you want to? We usually go for a good 3 hours though?
Will do, I know the farm ride is open pretty much all year as its mostly sand surface but not sure about the XC schooling. The fences on the farm ride are between 2-3' if that's any good for you?
