everytime i go hacking sully is getting stronger and stronger, i cant hack him and canter in company anymore as he just heads off and i cant hold him and dont want to enforce that on others. The speed doesnt bother me but essentially hes bolting in every field, its either relaxed walk or flat out gallop with no happy medium. In an ideal world i would but him in a stronger bit as he is in a tranz angled lozenge ns thing and grackle but he hates gag actions or ny polll pressure just sends him loopy and in a pelham he slams on the brakes as in past was used harshly on him.

thought about trying a combination noseband does anyone have any ideas i am at a complete loss...!

You could try a kineton nose band, they are good for horses that just set themselves against you... You could also have a play around with different mouthpieces, rollers, waterford, ported etc just to see what you can work with...
Mine was the same, but I found it was more because I was worrying he was going to tank off, now I drop the contact and do short sharp half halts when I feel he wants to speed up!

A martingale has helped with mine, and putting his flash on tight. But the best thing as he can be very strong and can buck, has been teaching him that every time he charges off he is made to circle until he listens to me. It has been a gradual improvement but he now respects the speed I want to go.

Seems everyone is saying you should put different bits in his mouth, tie his mouth shut tight, etc etc.

How about taking him back into the school and training him properly, transitions, half halts, control of the hip, respect of the bit in his mouth, not to lean on the bit, all fundermental stuff.
I was always taught, if its gone wrong go back to the begining and start again! There are no quick fixes that work and never will be.
Dont bit up until you have exhausted ALL other avenues !

Have you tried whacking your stirrups a few holes and bridging your reins? Get out of the saddle and use your body weight to hold him, if you bridge your reins and keep your hands low he ends up pulling against himself and will soon get the idea.

thank you dominobrown so fr that is my best stratergy but still am fighting a loosing battle, problem is in the school he is fine(ish) and does respect me and listen to aids its only in big outdoor spaces so think bitting/nosebands are probably the best answer (also at 17 its a bit of an old dog new tricks situation). Thank you guys think waterford will be next port of call then kineton thank you for your time! xx

Oh I know the feeling! except mine is on a 12.3hh New Forest who is 19! no amount of bitting up helps..........In fact the opposite! so the conclusion I've come to after 10 years of having him is, to either hack out with people who don't mind going fast :D or go it alone.

Turbo is brilliant if you let go of the reins ( does take courage ) and as dominobrown says, I get out of the saddle, lean over him, rub his neck and talk to him, saying things like "good boy, now walk" why this works, I have no idea, I just know if you pull on the reins he goes faster!

Oh and a drop noseband has helped a lot too
