Does anyone have any ideas as to what brakes I could use on my mad 14hh nf mare?
She is very cobby and built like a tank, and at nearly 16yo, she will never know better. I have her in a tom thumb with copper/sweet iron mouthpiece with copper rings on it, with a running martingale as she will throw her head up in an attempt to evade the bit along with a flash noseband. She then sets her neck against me, and tanks off. I used to use a 3-ring dutch gag - no use, pelham - no good and lastly a kimblewick with curb chain&flash - holds her for a while but Im have to really hold on to her. It's so embarassing - she's only ickle!
Does anyone have any suggestions bit or noseband wise...please?!?

I used to have a mare just like this, but 13.2hh and about 20 yrs old. Maybe try her in a Market Harborough Martingale? It encourages the horse to put it's head down and then they can't evade the bit. It's worked on several horses I've ridden!

Hi - I have a very strong 13.2hh Haflinger - and after trying what feels like everything, I found that a high ring grakle noseband is amazing with the bit of your choice. I use to have mine in a 3 ring dutch gag bit with a french link but now have him in a wonder gag and the high ring grakle or can be called American grakle - and he stops everytime. Hope this helps. Good luck. It's usually the ponies that are worse than the huge horses for stopping!!

Our nearly-19 year old 14hh Welsh D is the same, no hope of improving her now! Currently in a pelham, sometimes she's better in a kimblewick, sometimes a grakle helps, other times she fights it so much she bleeds. Actually hacking is usually best in a hackamore and short running martingale, but that's hopeless for hunting or jumping. We haven't tried a market harborough, that's a good idea. Have wondered about a kineton and I keep looking for a pony size one on ebay. Good luck.

That's one thing i havent tried on the little madam! She made herself sor trying to take off across a snow covered field, so now i have a plan b...thanks!

A friend suggested a kineton too, but my only concern is that sim has a very broad head for a pony with a wide mouth - 5.5" but with a short mouth so I dont want to put too much in there or block her breathing atll, although atleast she would stop then i suppose! She went beserk schooling the other day and even when i switched to her kimblewick (not dressage etiquette but more hope of stopping) ther was still no convincing her. Hunting is a no-no as I can barely hold her at the meet, sometimes it goes past being funny but u got to love them.
Waterfords are supposed to be good, but she really objected to the mouthpiece. Let me know how you get on withthe kineton, thank s for the advice
