Hi,

Does anyone have any suggestions for exercises in Canter, my boy gets bored fairly quickly and endless circles arent the most exciting thing in the world!

Have used poles on the ground, figures of eight etc but would like a few more exercises to make our schooling sessions more enjoyable for us both.

He is fairly balanced and rhythmical but could be better so any exercises which will help with this would also be great.

Thanks alot x

3 x Loop Canter Serpentine, with simple change on center line. Can then progress to walking 3 strides across center line and then picking up canter again and then even halting on center line.

ask for different leads at different markers, so you counter canter...then trot, then canter, the trot, then counter canter, change reign..

Leg yielding, travers, canter pirouettes, counter-canter, lengthening and shortening strides, flying changes.

Hey, why not try dressage

The quarter line exercise, start this in walk and build up to canter, on left rein (although you will actualy be circling constantly on the right rein) do quarter line down the long side, then 10m circle right out to the outside track, continue to next corner and repeat, continue round the school asking for extention in the straights and collection on the circles. Repeat exercise in opposite direction. Great for lightening and collection.

Satelite circles canter a 20m or 15 m circle say on left rein at certain points trot and ride a smaller circle on the other rein (so right rein), then back into left canter (at the point to small circle finishes) and back onto the bigger circle, then repeat at another point- sizes depend on how big your school is. Or you can canter going large and trot and circle at each marker.

Cantering squares. On and back on the circle. Direct trans- canter 5 strides, walk 5 strides, canter 5 strides etc or just do the same in trot and canter. 1/4 walk pirouette into canter. Simple changes (which are through walk) on straight lines and off half 10m circles. Counter canter- lots of these- down long side half 10m circle back to track E/B then counter canter, progress to counter canter round short end and eventually onto circles
