I am having problems in my canter with my horse! He is very big as in 17.3 and I am only 5ft5.
I have lessons with David trott on my flat and my horse never does it in my lessons, but when I am schooling on my own he does it all the ruddy time!

We will be cantering round and he will keep changing leg without me asking him to! How can I stop this??? I have been doing canter poles to try and keep it going but he still ruddy does it!

Its only a recent thing, but its driving me mad!

Thanks

Do you move your weight at all as when I first rode mine he did it again never in lessons did it in a dressage show trainier ewas watching and said i was shifting my weight so he was responding - opps.

Do you have any long straight bridleways you can canter on so to keep you balanced?

I'm having similar problems, although mine changes leg every time I use the whip to keep her cantering, which is often

I'll be following this thread with interest

Well I went in the school last night and put a big long straight line of canter poles and he still did it.. He never does it on a hack, he is to busy trying to buck me off LOL!!

No I am quite still when riding, and I am sure David would of said if I was moving my weight.. Not sure tho! Will have a look tonight when I am riding!

Might find it easier to go on one leg than the other, if he only changes onto e.g. the right leg all the time? As for yours Amymay (ETS sorry Fairhill, are you the same person?! Lol your cat looks the same!) almost sounds like she thinks that the whip is the aid to change legs lol!

Perhaps try keeping an inside bend at all times, and include lots of 20m circles? What happens if you ride through it and ask for the correct leg again in the corner, do you get it? if so could you ignore the change until you get the right one and praise that like mad?

(ETS Ok then maybe not if he does it worse on corners - so he'd rather go around on the wrong leg ON A CORNER?? weird!)

I wonder if you sit more still in a lesson, the bends suggests you move / lean ever slightly more. I agree I would never have thought I did it. Hmm sounds like hacking is fun then!!
can someone record you to show David?

AmyMay's cat is far prettier than mine

Thanks for the help though! I think mine is doing it to avoid cantering. She's also ducking out using her outside shoulder to avoid going straight so I'm working on that... I've been changing rein asap as soon as she does it and kicking on and avoiding using the whip

I'm having the same issue on the right rein but only on the straight. I don't think its a weight issue as she does it with her owner as well (who has a very good seat). Will try some of the suggestions above I think!

Also perhaps have a back person out, though molineux yours sounds very comfy, but poss mecg maybe yours is a little uncomfy?

I would try the kerilli route too, maybe even keep your weight a little too much inside, stand a little on the inside stirrup, I know it's not ideal but may help train?

Kerilli have I seen you on the BD forum?
