Ok so out hacking my just turns 5 year old will move into a canter with a "go on then" or a kiss, and a slight nudge, in the school however it's like trying to get blood from a stone and when she does move into canter, she stops after a few strides, and does the crazy fast trot! any tips?

Do you make sure that you keep a good consistant contact with your reins in the school? It can be very tempting, when they feel a bit 'backwards' going, to throw the reins at them, but is very counter productive.

I had this with my 3yo when she was first cantering in the school, she had cantered on the gallops when training to be a racer but never had to go around corner so was very confused. I just slowed her down after the crazy trot, waited till she was settled and asked again coming out of a corner onto a straight and kept my leg on and lots of vocal encouragement to keep her going. Now I have trouble stopping her!! :p

Does she canter on the lunge?
Does she canter if you free school her - and i am not on about chasing a teriffied horse round an arena with whips!

Maybe she feels unblanced in the school in canter...thats why she reverts to the very fast trot?

Is it worse on one rein or another?

Perhaps you need some lessons for some pointers/help/tips. Sounds like its a "rider error". If she is doing it everywhere except when you school her, it might be your schooling techniques.

how would you school in a circle at a canter, i meant what aids would you give? i try to keep my leg on, outside rein on etc, but she'll do a few paces at canter n then just slow to a mad fast trot thing and proceed to prat about
