Hi, I have a 6 year old gelding who is 14.1hh I've had him for a year and he came over from Ireland a month before we bought him. We didn't have him vetted as he wasn't expensive as wasn't going to be competing to a high level as he is a family pony.
We mainly rode him in a sand school and hacked him but a few month into having he we did some cross country and show jumping and started to notice that he has a strange way of going as would hold his tail to the right and be a bit stiff on his off side hind leg. We decided to get a few people to look at him and said that he had nothing wrong with him just he had been poor at some stage in his life and he was backed quickly,so we did lots of raised polls lunging hacking trotting polls bending to build him up. His trot is much stronger but we now have an issue with his canter but only on the left rein he seems to not be able to get the correct leg and when he does he loses his balance very quickly and just rushes (almost starting to panic) My friend who has grade B show jumpers has had him for a few weeks schooling him but we still are not getting any where with his canter.we was told again do lots of raised polls lunging but he just seems to be getting so bored and is able to do the trotting polls no matter how high, low, far away and close together they are.So does any one have any tips or advice?
Thankyou :)

I have exactly the same issue with my Irish! He was rushed into backing also, so Ive gone back to basics and Im getting walk and trot established first. The only time I try canter is on the pessoa, as it encourages him to engage and he cant rush off, also helps him balance by himself without me on top, as I found I was making the problem worse. Lots of work on straight lines when ridden, but if in a school then away from the fence so he doesnt rely on that. Get a good instructor, some good lessons, and youll get there!

Getting a pessoa is something that is worth a try as on the lunge he will canter and sometimes get the correct lead but then gets faster and faster and ends up slipping. I've changed instructors 6 month ago as my old one was making things harder for him as she was just asking us to keep cantering and try again and again, it was putting to much stress on him as his balance isn't going to improve by pushing him as much as possible. My new one has advised us on doing the raised trotting polls, lunging and lots of hacking but it wasn't helping the canter.
Thank you for your help :)
