I am thinking of doing a bit of unaffiliated dressage with my cob mare, and will be starting with Intro before moving onto Prelim as she's unbalanced in canter and tends to run through it and fall in on circles. We are working on this, obviously, with schooling, and building her fitness after a month off due to bad weather.
My question is - Prelim 1 is a test that features regularly at our local venue, along with 10 and 14. What are the canter movements for 1?
I'm not asking for the whole test, or even specific school movements, just the general gist so I know whether its worth buying and attempting this test. So what are we looking at - 20m circles in working canter? Or pick up canter between X and A (for example) and continue large around arena, type movements?
Is 1 a more basic test than, say 14? (As in, as the numbers ascend the tests become more technical?). I remember schooling at home many moons ago (on a different horse) and the test - cannot remember which one - required a tight turn in canter past A and onto the FXH diagonal. There's no way that little cob would be able to execute a turn that tight yet!
Apologies if these Qs are a bit dense, I'm a complete dressage noob! x

I'm not familiar with Prelim 1 and don't have a copy in front of me but, yes, the tests do get more complex as the numbers increase.

I don't think that you'll get tight turns in Prelim 1. Probably pick up canter on a circle/corner and continue until a straight section and back into trot?

Thanks!
I'll mosey on over to BD website and buy some tests, might as well give it a bash, I've got nothing to lose other than dignity and self respect... Lol! x

Prelim 1 includes a bit of canter around the school and 20m circle on each rein.

If you search on youtube for prelim 1 you'll find videos of riders riding the test which will give you a better idea of what the whole test involves.

I'm doing the Prelim 1 next Sunday and have been battling through the canter movements as you come across the diagonal at KXM in working trot and pick up the working canter at M, 20m circle at C and then transition to working trot at E.

Then reversed on the other side, working trot at FXH, working canter at H, 20m circle at C, then transition to working trot at B.

Hattie has been anticipating the transition to working canter at the corner markers when I've been trotting across the diagonal, then ends up falling in and rushing the transitions :p Yesterday I practised asking slightly early for them just before the M and the H markers while we are still on the straight before the turn and it was a little better.

It's a good, short test as it doesn't blow the horse's or the rider's brain too much, lol.

No canter across the diagonals in Prelim 1, just start canter on a 20m circle and canter around the arena and trot between 2 markers on both reins. Go for it!
