Canter on right rein

Had a lesson yesterday and as usual Monty had been polishing his halo. Worked really nicely whilst instructor was there, typical!
Did struggle with canter on right rein yesterday as I tense up, flap about and lose the plot but instructor was there to kick me up the bum and tell me to get on with it

He just runs in trot whilst I'm panicking

Today I could not get him to canter on the right rein. I know he finds bending this way difficult which is why I spent a while flexing and bending him before attempting any faster work.
Really need to be able to do it without instructor there.
Anyone know of any ideas, please?

Can you do a walk to canter? Might stop the rushing in trot and you panicking? Although, I really do know nothing about schooling properly!!

if you are having trouble getting the right lead, bend his head very slightly to the outside, this opens up the inside shoulder and encourages them to take the correct lead. It may also help with rushing. this is only a temporary measure as ideally you need to have the horse bent around your inside leg. but it might help you get started.

also, when he runs, half halt him, get him steady take a few deep breaths and try again, do not allow him to canter from running or it will become a bad habit! do it 20 times if you have to, be persistant and it will come!
good luck!

GAH! We all reach a brick wall with something or other don't we?! Our new one is that Junior's scared of everything and leaps about a bit, doh!

Rachel is right about flexing to the outside, that should help.

How did your dressage go hun?

Ha ha, run Monty, run! Sorry, enough now!

Can't believe you wimped out of the dressage

Oh well, there will be another one I'm sure.

Have you tried trot/canter poles?

Classical aids
Reinforce pressure of outside leg behind the girth
Body weight well well to the inside, ... unbalancing the horse to the inside, and
Rachel is right, flex to the outside will help

I often find the the harder I try to perfect the aids the worse things get - it's a vicious cycle with me!

My boy is poor on the right rein as he seems to listen too much to the outside leg so to fix this my RI had me really shorten my left stirrup and put all me weight into the right one - to the extent that my right bum cheek was almost out the saddle - feels awful but works a treat every time - it seems my balance and aids are not working when i think I'm applying them correctly so this is also something I need to work on!
