I'm having some real canter problems with Flash, on one rein he is always going off on the wrong leg! I've had his saddle checked, and the back man is due in a week. I was worried it's something I'm doing to unbalance him because my back is really bad at the moment, and it's my weak rein too, so I lunged him and free schooled him, and although he is better, he constantly changes lead, does about 5 flying changes in one lap of our very tiny school!

Any suggestions on getting it right very kmuch appreciated, it's driving us both nuts!

I posted about the same problem a while back. I couldnt get Arch on the correct lead on the right rein!
I used the pole thing where you put a pole on the cirle an ask for canter over the pole and that helped.
But in the end I found I was just thinking about it too much!
Now I dont even think about the canter leg problems and just sit nice and quietly and ask.
Arch is still quite stiff on the right rein compared to the left, but its just something I need to work.

oh thank you, I'll try the pole thing

I wondered whether I was thinking about it too much, so just sat there but he still does it!

If it's both of your weaker reins, then he's probably escaping through his shoulder. Try changing the rein, and leg yielding the last few strides to the fence, and then asking for canter. If he gets the right leg, then carry on for a few strides, but stop before he gets unbalanced. If he gets the wrong leg, then stop him straightaway, before he manages a stride if possible.
I've had 6 years of Chloe cantering on the wrong leg, so know just about every trick in the book!
