Ok Iam allowed a few silly questions that I am a little shy to ask my instructor.

As a novice rider ...half a dozen 1 on 1 lessons .
really enjoying it but would really like to move on a little quicker from rising trot to cantering, also are all school horses just plodders I find it hard to keep them trotting?
my instructor says he/she is lazy...etc ..every school needs them etc...

Thanks

You need to develop an independant seat or its really not fair on the horse to attempt canter - no matter how 'ploddy' they seem.

Unfortunately there's no short cut to a good independant seat appart from practice, practice, practice.

You may find some of the trouble you have keeping the horse in trot is you are still developing muscles. Stick at it, its worth it.

Perhaps ask for some lunge lessons. That will allow you do develop you seat, balance and position and help you gain a better "feel" for the horse and the rythmn of its gaits. The instructor will be able to keep the horse going underneath you so go won't have to focus so much on keeping the momentum underneath you. Also, see if there is a mechanical horse near you as I have heard great things about them!

[/ QUOTE ] Yes agree with lunge lessons, There was a man at our RS and we used to try and keep same instructor for clients rather than change instructors on them so we all had set days and times, The mans usual instructor was off sick so I took the lesson he was saying how he did not feel balanced and very heavy when he cantered which when I said I will assess you he was on advanced he was banging so hard in canter imo he should not of been cantering I advised lunge lessons and the difference was straight away he came away from lunging sessions much happier and sorer as he was using muscles he had not been using properly.
