morning peeps..

after my post about issues cantering, I decided to brave the use of a schooling whip last night.

first of all warmed up and then did lots of leg yields in trot - both rising and sitting - and she was still 'skittling' when yielding right to left, but with the use of the stick she was alot better and i went straight when she wasn't working properly - all good.

then the canter - well, as always, I cantered on her good rein first and lenghtened / shortened, transitioned / circled etc, and all good. and onto the other rein - well, whip in left hand, we cantered and just using it lightly she really was alot better - i tried lengthening on that rein but then we just got the worst downwards fall into trot, so did it a few more times to ensure we ended on a good note and she was such a good girl!! no bucking and I survived, so will use a whip for the w/end's test too.

so thanks guys - got a bit further down the road on that one, and lived to tell the tale!

forgot to mention that when i was doing leg yields on Bonnie's easy rein, some new livery was watching and later asked did I compete in dressage

Congratulations Bandit.

Could you tell me how long ago your other post was and its title.

My Horse Owen, must have been cropped to death by a previous owner as when ever I bring out a schooling whip or any other crop, lunge whip he goes schitzo.

after several weeks or work with him I have managed to get him to ride round the manage and allow me to pick up bamboo canes placed inside cones and move them over his neck and place them back in a cone a little further down the side. This all seemed very hopefull so i tried a schooling whip across my leg and he just takes off, literaly bolts round the manage. I end up throwing the schooling whip out off the arena and then bring him back under control.

I hope your previous post may have some helpfull tips as ou seem to have moved a lot further forward than i have.

Hi there -

your horse sounds slightly different to mine with their 'issues'..

I posted yesterday about my mare's canter being weak, and one suggestion was the use of a schooling whip to encourage the engagement of her hind legs. I was aprehensive as she's very sharp and I tend not to use spurs or whips as she can buck - one of which landed me in hospital with suspected fractured pelvis - hence my reluctance initially.

the mare however was accepting of the whip and didn't really object.

not quite the same scenario as you, but hope that helps.
