Moon isnt that intelligent about changing legs, tbh it's not just an under-saddle thing as everytime I watch her in the field she happily trundles round disunited!!
I just watched my DVD from Gatcombe and it seems I didnt notice she was dis-united for pretty much all of the last field. She's galloping well and very happy, it doesnt feel bad but it does worry me a little! She had pulled a shoe so I wonder whether that didnt help.

Any ideas? She's pretty weak across the back but very athletic and loose in her jump and movement.

I have exactly the same problem with Winston.

He happily changes behind and canters disunited when being lunged and going xc/hunting or sjing.
It drives me mad, but hes quite happy.
He too is weak behind, and now hes back in full work, trying to get him to really work the back muscles to see if that helps, plus getting him seen regularly by a good physio has helped, but tbh he still continues to do it *SIGH*

I have a friend who i teach, whose mare is so weight sensitive she flying changes and sorts herself out really easily.

I thought it was just because winston was big leggy thing, but apparently not lol

She is ok during normal schooling on the flat isnt she? If she is, then I wouldnt be too worried the back or anything, its most prob (hopefully!) just a baby thing - I would just see if she can be eduacated out of it so always give her a good kick with the outside leg to make her change behind when disunited.

Had one lesson with Sam Griffiths on Ellie where he was telling me that he teaches all his youngsters flying changes from day one, and he said that they are often disunited behind at first but he just gives them a good kick with the outside leg and opens the inside hand a little, then keep asking until theyv'e done a clean change behind. When Ellie was disunited I just kept asking her until she did it and she got the hang of it in 20 mins.. (magic it does work!) I know that with Moon is not flying changes that you're teaching her here but its a similar sort of scenario and it might apply to the XC?

*nods* Toddy used to teach 3 and 4 yr olds to do flying changes iirc... some find them very easy anyway.
i'd be worried by a horse that stayed disunited for more than, say, 20 strides. most find it uncomfortable (not to mention the rider, it's like sitting on a camel!) and change on their own.

Yep- never a problem in the school and in sj she will change in front but always catches up behind pretty quick. It's just this free wheeling with legs all disorganised- she doesnt feel unbalanced though it, it's bizarre!!

could it be that she was disunited because she had changed in front, but because it was the last field she did not have the energy or strength to chance behind to correct it? If she is young she will probably improve as she develops more in her back. Hope she does not get to comfortable doing it in the field or you may find it harder to stop her.
Hope that makes sense.

is she changing behind by herself or is she just v late when doing flying changes.?
if it is the former it may be worth getting her back looked at as kerilli first suggested. Andy used to change behind by himself on the lunge, this was just before he had all the problems with his back.. he never did it under saddle or XC.. may be worth the check for peace of mind..
if it just late on the changes then as Christmas_Derby said, the advice Sam gave her also worked when he suggested it to me too..!
