How many of you canter on the lunge? Ive seen quite a few people say that they dont. I always have, but now im wondering if it causes problems or is it just personal preference?

Can anyone enlighten me.....please???

I don't canter any of our horses on the lunge. Actually I don't lunge at all, only free school or long line. Some research indicates that only a small amount of lungeing can cause stress and strain on the horse's limbs. And also I personally prefer long lines as you have two reins to help to balance the horse more if needs be. But for me free schooling is the best of all with the horse in self carriage.

I have been taught to train the canter on the longe. If a horse goes a bit unbalanced or on the forehand, if the transitions need sorting, or it drops out of canter, its a surefire way to improve it.

I agree its stressful on their limbs but if they are in full work and you don't overdo it it should be okay.

I would canter horses on the lunge - but on a good surface and with care to keep them balanced.
I have also ridden on the lunge whilst the horse cantered...as the guinea pig for the BHS Int Teach test.
That was a whole new 'wall of death' experience, as the examinee decided I sat squint (I don't) and asked me to move 6 inches to the outside (really). I had to hang on with my left knee to avoid centrifugal force sending me onto the examiners' laps. Examinee failed, thank God.

lol i did guineapig for Int teaching test and the examinee kept flicking the horse with the whip making him shoot forward while i had not reins or stirrups (instant fail) i asked her to stop.. cause it was bloody dangerous!

Same candidate taught my colleague (a very bold eventer) for the XC section and without a warm up, pointed at the largest fence and said 'Go jump that!' Colleague did, then came back to candidate who said 'Bloody hell,m what were you doing jumping a fence that size - I wouldn't have!'
