I have real problems on one( left) rein getting my boy to canter on the right leg, ive tried asking him to canter on circles, corners and most of the time he sets off on the wrong leg meaning we have to keep trying till get the right leg eventually... on the other rein we have no problems..any ideas how i can get him to set off on the right lead?

Can he get it on the lunge without the rider on? If not, I'd start there.

Every time he strikes off on the wrong lead bring him back to trot immediately then ask again, don't let him go forwards because you'll just be confusing him, he must know that he's made a mistake.

How are you asking him for canter? Could you possibly be unbalancing him?

He can on lunge most of the time but he hates lunging and messes about the whole time lol (other people have tried to lunge him too but thats for another day lol) just with a rider on he prefers the wrong leg... any rider not just me, other people have tried. lol

You mean you cant get the right leg on the left rein because he keeps striking off on the right leg? :D

Personally I'd have a pole coming out of the corner, circle spiralling in and back out, then as you hit the track ask to strike off over the pole - or similar using leg yield from the 3/4 line back to the track then strike off over a pole... Assuming he doesn't have a deeper reason not to strike off, naturally...
