started halter breaking my foal and whilst running my hand down his leg noticed on one of his hind legs on the outside of the leg looked what to be a capped hock..iv not noticed it before..what's the best treatment?? is it something that will heal in time with a young foal?..

You really need your vet out and sadly NO once a hock has been capped that is it unless you get it drained by your vet in a hospital.

Do you know how long the capped hock has been there?

Usually vets will under xray drain the fluid and put a pressure bandage on and change these regularly as well as administer pain relief and of course antibiotics.

You are talking of a stay in an equine hospital for about 5 to 7 days depending upon how successful it has been.

You can leave it of course as the above will cost in excess of £3000 easily.

Your foals showing career is over!

But for everything else jumping, hacking etc it will be fine just a large lumpy hock

Hope that helps
