I was once told to rub goose grease in daily for 10 days. Not sure if they were pulling my leg though. Think all the dogs in the neighbourhood would be out. LOL
Goose grease is brilliant but will remove all the hair as the heat it produces is immense. We had a mare who had an awful accident and used it on her and it helped enormously!
Not sure why you would want intense heat for a capped hock? Capped hock is internal damage to the joint, commonly caused by the horse laying on concrete to rest but other injuries would produce the same result. The fluid you can see under the skin is joint fluid similar to windgalls. It's the body's way of trying to protect the area from further damage. Cold hosing will eventually enable the joint to heal but prevention is always better than cure. If you think ned may have been laying on very hard ground then maybe a change of bedding or management? Or maybe ned has simply been laying down a LOT more often on just one side in which case you need to know why in case there is another underlying problem.
