capped hock

dose ne 1 no of anything that would help get the swelling down on a capped hock? also do i need 2 call the vet? had a horse with 1 b4 n dont remember that the vet actually did ne thing except confirm it was capped. horse is not lame & hock dosent appear painful at all. any advice appreaciated!

when my new horse was vetted vet phoned me and said both his hocks where capped but its not a problem. they were only minor - ive sinced looked at them and cant really see that they are to be honest. Vet didnt mention it on his report so my insurers wont know about it. Vet also knew that i wanted this horse for top level dressage but again he said its not a problem - so dont worry about it!

depends what has caused the capped hock. a horse i used to school developed a capped hock but she was also lame. she had a scan and it turned out she had a tear in the tendon over the hock. shes now on rest and in hand walking.
if your horse is not lame and shows no signs of pain then its probably fine. the swellings tend to stay (like windgalls).
do you know why they happened - did she bang herself?

thanks for all the info, that link was good parisienne_girl. he must of banged it on his stable wall thats the only thing i can think of. he's in overnight and can get a bit restless, suppose he could of done it while rolling. it deff dosent seem painful, but is huge! other horses seemed 2 go down a bit after a while. honestly horse is accident prone, hes covered in lumps and bumps!

My boy got kicked two weeks after I brought him, and had a wacking cut on it, and it swelled massively, but was never lame. because it was a cut i cold polticed it, and it was hosed 3x a day. There is now no evidence of the capped hock, just the scar. I wouldnt worry about it, he has been placed highly in county showing with it, and has never caused him any lameness.

My boy has capped hocks, had them when I bought him and they havent changed size or caused any problems at all. So I wouldnt worry too much, I dont think you can do anything about capped hocks - least my vet didnt think so.

my mare capped her hock kicking the stable wall i found bute cold hosing along with warm hoseing to get blood flowing through and what i found great was an elastic sports support which i had for my tenis elbow it slipped off but stayed up a good while and it does reduce the swelling great she does it now and again slighty and as we show her alot out comes the suppert and hey presto no fluid in hock give it a try . vets can drain them but my vet not keen as he says they usually refill and theres always a chance of infection good luck

when my boy capped his hock I used DMSO from the vets - this brought the initial swelling down. Then one of my friends who is into showing told me that she used movelat (sp) - you can buy it over the counter at any pharmacy - this brought it down so that now you can hardly notice it. Good luck x

My boy's hocks go up and down - we put it down to his racing days. It doesn't really bother us as we don't show. I check his legs daily and there's never any heat in that area - some days they're more swollen than others, but I was under the impresion that once a capped hock has formed they tend to come up and down.

well hock has gone down alot since he first did it, have just been hosing it with cold water, is still noticible. think i mite try the movelat n see how it goes. dont think il bother having it drained, am not 2 bothered as dont do showing so will just see wot the movelat dose. thanks!
