Hi, my horse I have just noticed has a capped hock, what is the best course of action?? I have been told that this will be there 'forever' now and that there is nothing that can be done, is this true. I have hosed it with cold water & he is not lame on it - Any suggestions???

My mare has one vet offered to drain it but I have left it alone and it has gone down alot with gentle massage.Ours was down to kick and then cellulitis. If you have it drained it can come back .I bought some clivers a herbal product which helped with inflammation back legs are notorious for bad circulation and I have also had some rubber matting laid to make sure she doesnt bang it in stable.

Where i worked a TB yearling got a capped hock and we used ice tight on it and it worked wonders it took the swelling down within 2 weeks. i now always have some at the stables and have seen some good results on various bangs and lumps.
However dont use on broken skin, but if its just the lump it will be fine.

Thanks thats good to hear, I have rubber matting but he is just a bit of a plonker so probably banged it in the stable. I will defo try the ice and see if it makes any difference, sad thing is it doesn't really bother him its just his mum thinks it looks horrible. We are so fickle really.... Thanx again
