Hi

My horse has managed to cap one of his hocks. :( I have been cold hosing 2/3 a day for 20 minutes. I have also applied cool gel and arnica gel. I have read about DMSO but Im not sure what I think about that. There was some swelling around the surrounding area which has made its way down his leg over the last 3 days so that is draining away and looking much better. The actual capped hock seems to tighten up over night but then fill again when out in the field during the day. I am assuming from rolling on the hard ground? He has rubber matting a big shavings bed in the stable.

Does anyone have any experiences with Back on Track boots for capped hocks? He also has hock spavin so have been considering these boots anyway but wondered if they would help with the capped hocks too?

He already wears Equ-Streamz, any idea whether they be able to be worn at the same time as the BonT boots ?

Thank you :)
xx

Back on Track hock boots are IMHO excellent for lower hock arthritis. I have them in regular use on my own mare, and she clearly loves them.

Equu streamz are a con job (do a search on here), so I don't suppose that it matters whether you apply them at the same time as the BoT boots, as long as the Equ steamz aren't physically hurting the horse :).

I have heard of the use of an epsom salt poultice to encourage fluid reabsorption.

Agree totally (both points) I use the BOT boots for hock arthritis and they are very good. However they are there to WARM the joint so would do the opposite of your cold hosing etc.

Thank you for your feedback! I am going to continue to hose for another week. And I am going to bring back into gentle walk work to help with draining excess fluid.

The actual hock isn't massively huge so as long as its not hurting him I am not overly bothered if its just cosmetic.

Once its settled down as much as it can I will look into purchasing the hock boots for the arthritis !

thank you :)
