Car options for b test holders

I know the weights thing has been done to death :Dbut ..........
what are my vehicle options as a b licence- horse is 550kg, trailer is 770kg looking to pay up to around 5k so its not going to be anything too new! :cool::cool:

Any one else out there with a b licence towing legally? how did you do it? :confused:
 
You can't!!!

It's not the weight of your trailer it's the Maximum Authorised Mass of your trailer... the amount it can carry! Even a single Ifor is 1600kg, so the 770kg you quoted much be it's actually weight not it's MAM.
So your horse (550kg) plus your trailer (min 1600kg) is 2150kg, then theirs a at least a tonne of car plus fuel, passengers, etc etc.

Just do the test.
 
you can get the plate on the trailer (mam) down graded to whatever weight you need/will be carrying so mine would be down graded to around 1350kg the combined mam would need to be under 3500 kg so leaving me to find a car of max 2000kg :)

There are plenty of combinations that can do it I just wanted car suggestions- ROG where are you!!:confused:
 
ps I am having towing lessons its not a test avoidance thing (well it is a bit!) but I need the car for work so dont need a massive 4x4 and as I have no help with the horses what so ever I will only ever be travelling one anywhere so no need for a double box.
 
I wouldn't advise towing with anything less than 2000kg. I just don't think it's safe.
Put then I don't think it's safe to tow without doing the test either. There are too many fools on the road without adding trailers to them too :(

My understanding is that the MAM is the maximum weight that your trailer should be once you've put a horse in it? This means that you wouldn't add the 550 of the horse to the MAM but its already included in it.
 
Here are some ideas of 4X4s which can be used with some lightweight horse trailers for legal B licence towing ....


BATESON LIGHT HORSE TRAILER

Contact trailer manufacturer to have trailer downplated if needed (free or very little cost)

2005 Toyota RAV4 2.0 D-4D XT3 5DR (4X4) with these specifications/dimensions
Unladen/kerb = 1442
GVW = 1930
Max towing weight = 1500
Max trailer plated MAM = 1442 kgs


Nissan X trail (4X4) with these specifications/dimensions
Unladen/kerb = 1515
GVW = 2050
Towing = 2000
Max trailer plated MAM = 1450 kgs

Kia Sportage (AWD) with these specifications/dimensions
Unladen/kerb = 1678
GVW = 2140
Towing = 1600
Max trailer plated MAM = 1360 kgs

FREELANDER 1 (2001 - 2005)
Unladen/kerb = 1500
GVW = 2040
Towing = 1800
Max trailer plated MAM = 1460 kgs

SUBARU FORRESTER (4X4)
Unladen/kerb = 1465 minimum
GVW = 2050 maximum
Towing = 2000
Max trailer plated MAM = 1450 kgs

Skoda Yeti (4X4) with these specifications/dimensions
Kerb = 1530
GVW = 2070
Towing capacity = 2000
Max trailer plated MAM = 1430 kgs


Deduct trailer unladen weight from max trailer plated weight to get maximum load/horse weight for the trailer
Example:- Nissan (1450) minus IFOR HB403 (770 appx) = load/horse 680 kgs
 
When I first decided to buy a trailer I bought an Ifor willliams 505 and drove a
1.8 Citreon Grand Picasso which had an kerb weight of 1600

My Ifor weight around 1100g I think and my pony 300kg

I checked with the garage and the police to make sure the combination was legal and safe for towing my pony and I was told yes, however if it was calculated by the MAM then it would have been overloaded.

So now I am confused as the police even said it was fine.

However I now have a 4x4 since down sizing my car.
 
yes the horse should be included in the MAM so trailer weight is 770kg horse is 550kg total weight is 1320 kg so id get trailer MAM down graded to 1350 kg
im awful at exams and go to pieces as I dont need to take the test there is no point. :eek:

Also me towing a 14hh pony in a single trailer with a smaller 4x4 is no different weight ratio wise to someone towing two 16hh warmbloods in a double trailer with a bigger 4x4:cool:

Spot on :)

Well, almost ....

MAM means the maximum weight the trailer can be when placed on a weighbridge fully loaded

GVW means the same thing for the vehicle

Two issues
Licence
Weight

On a B+E licence (and a B licence)
There is the vehicle manufacturers towing capacity and the trailer plated MAM
The LOWER of those two weights must not be exceeded

On a B only licence (as well as the rule above)
The vehicle GVW added to the trailer plated MAM must not exceed 3500 kgs
The trailer MAM must not be more than the vehicle kerbweight

Now you can work out if you were/are legal or not

That really opens up your options

What I would look for is a car with these weight dimensions/specifications:-

Kerbweight no LOWER than 1400 kgs
GVW no HIGHER than 2100 kgs
Towing capacity no LOWER than 1400 kgs

That would allow you a trailer plated MAM at 1400 kgs for B licence towing
You need 1400 kgs as your horse is 550 and your trailer is 770 = 1320 and will need the extra 80 kgs for other bits

Dont ask me what I recommend because I would not know where to start !!
