I pick up a car tomorrow from a dealership (not new but certainly better than my current banger) and have part exchanged mine. I've had to pay £270 for a tax disc for the new car but I've only just paid the same 2 weeks ago on a twelve month disc for my old car.
Question is, can I remove the disc from the old one for a refund or are cars usually exchanged with the disc? Nothing was mentioned at the time of the sale and the receipt I have doesn't mention it either. I would have been none the wiser except a work colleague mentioned that I should remove it but I don't want to if it will cause a problem with the dealer.

You can send the disc for a refund (you won't get the whole year), or you can do what I did and ask the dealer to pay for the tax (they have to tax it anyway, so are usually happy to do this.) Mind you, I do have a very good relationship with my dealer (currently on my fourth new car from them.)

Take the disc out and send off to DVLA for a refund. This is the usual practice when dealing with a dealer, you would only normally leave tax in if selling privately and had included it in the price.

I would think you need to get a refund from it as you have paid for two lots of car tax, it shouldnt cause a problem with them they are not bothered either way if it has tax or not, part ex's mainly go for auction not back on the forecourt unless your car was very new which by the sounds of it it wasnt.

Yes, just send it to dvla and you'll get a refund. Dealer won't care, they will have trade plates anyway so won't worry about tax

If you dont send the disc for a refund the dealer no doubt will

Generally cars on forecourts arent taxed as they could remain unsold for months. the new tax disc will either be paid for by the dealer when selling it on or if not part of the deal (and more common) the new owner will pay to tax it themselves

You may find that the dealer banked on getting a refund when he gave you his price but I'd stand firm and remove the disc when you drop the car off

Yep, infact on the little form you need to send back, it says that the dealership can't do this, so you need to send it for a refund. If you go on the DVLA website, you can search and there's a form which you can fill in if you don't have the tax disc (or one if you do) I've just applied for mine back :D

I would definitely take the tax out and get the refund yourself. If you don't I guarantee the dealer will do so once he has registered the vehicle into his name

Only the registered keeper (name on the logbook) can apply for licence refund

In the past dealers could but DVLA have stopped that now.

Go to DVLA website, you need V14 licence refund form

Sorry, not a nerd, its my job :)
