thankyou scots mare, but (im not going to)
could i make it myself if i wanted to? just by cutting up cardboard boxes into small squares? or do manufacturers treat it with something?

Aimzz I think that cardboard for bedding is manufactured to compress it hugely so that when the horse then pees on it, it can absorb vast amounts of liquid. If you just cut up cardboard boxes, it wouldn't absorb much at all. Most boxes that come with eg cornflakes in are deliberately moisture resistant, at least on one side! However, shredded newspaper works a treat! The tiny riding school where I learned to ride had a shredder that would take Daily Telegraph size sheets and you could get a whole newspaper through at a time. All the clients used to save their newspapers and one of the regular jobs was to stand for hours and feed tons of newspapers through the shredder to make bedding! Totally tedious but worked a treat! Later, when I had a grey horse at a full livery yard that was mega mean with their bedding, I saved my own newspapers and used to tear them into narrow strips and bag them up and they made great bedding. Highly absorbent and break down into compost as well as any commercial bedding.

I liked to think if my horse got fed up on the long winter nights, he could read bits of the paper too!!!!

i have just started using cardboard bedding. It's shredded corrugated cardboard, and so far it's working out quite well. It' s more absorbant than shredded paper and doesn't blow about as much.

Hi. I have read you previous posts and think I might be able to help.

I think cutting up cardboard will be a very difficult task but it would work if you can do enough. However, I think you might be better to use paper. We ran out of cardboard bedding a couple of days ago so I tore up newspaper into strips to keep me going until my next deliver. If you tear newspaper into two/three inch strips (tear at right angles to the roughest edge), it makes quite good bedding. It is quite fluffy so a little goes a long way. If you need more than your own waste newspapers, could you ask people at work or neighbours to give you theirs. Plus with the dark nights, its something you can do indoors while sitting in front of the telly! You could probably do enough to bed one horse for free and you are being eco-freindly!

thankyou happihorse, think im gonna try this way, cheap and eco friendly. maybe time consuming and work, but horses are time consuming soo..

all i need now is a horse on loan and somewhere to keep (:
