My Welsh Cob is 14 this year and I have noticed recently that his hocks are "clicky" when he walks. He is not lame and shows no signs of discomfort - I am guessing it is just a sign of aging!

I have also noticed that he takes longer to warm up in colder weather and can appear stiff for the first 5 minutes when ridden in the school.

I am thinking of putting a supplement in his feed to help assist with the "getting older" factor, however I am reluctant to spend out loads of dosh for some of the supplements on the market. My thoughts were more towards probably a more traditional approach by adding cod liver oil or other oils to his feed - can anyone recommend the best option without spending a fortune??

He is currently fed a leisure vitamin and mineral supplement and also has seaweed added to his feed.

Any suggestions welcome!!!

Comfrey root powder
Turmeric
Devils Claw
Cider Vinegar

Just a few that spring to mind... Mind you I always found that supplements like Cortaflex worked out cost effective.

My lad is 28 now so I tend to use a mix of the above mentioned (Not all!!!) He is stiff but not lame or uncomfortable.

He was diagnosed with Ringbone at 15. If it involves a leg, it has arthritis in it somewhere. I have managed to keep him going this long without having to resort to Bute, so something must be working... :)

I have used Cider Vinegar in the past and it seemed to work. Cortaflex does seem expensive but it does last 4 months and Ive seen some amazing changes to horses on it.

IMO I would never use cod liver oil for horses. Horses are veggie and are not designed to digest fish! It can cause liver probs if used for a long time. Also cod is endangered! Lets keep it for our fish and chips shops not our horses!!!!
