Hey guys, this might be long so I'm sorry in advance!

I have come to the end of a Diploma in Equine Science.
I currently work part time as an admin assistant and through this I get to do my NVQ 2 in business/admin - I finish this start of September and I am hoping to find another job after that as I really find this one boring!

I now have no idea what to do.

I want to go on and study some more, hoping to get a degree in something. I have always thought it would be horses. I know it doesn't pay well etc.etc. but I always thought I would go down that route.

I have also always been interested in Counselling/Working with young offendors.
I was thinking that after my NVQ i would do some sort of counselling course and I was getting quite exiting about it.

But tonight I have been thinking doing that might be a mistake as I have always wanted to go on and study with horses further.
I really don't know what to do and to do any sort of course now I will be paying quite a bit of money so want to make the right decision.

Any ideas at all?

I think that in the present climate grab whatever experience you can - if you can incorparate any horsey element then great, but realistically that sort of job is far and few between especially at the moment, unless you can afford to pauparising yourself .... but if you get relevant experience you may be able to move in that direction later.

I would say, before spending time and money on a course, do two things.

1) Get some work experience - and i don't really mean shadowing someone for a week. If you're thinking about horses as a career, find a job on a yard for a few months at least. When I left uni I was determined that I would work with horses (funnily enough, had plans eventually to work with 'troubled teens' and horses). But after a couple of jobs on yards, I realised that something I enjoy immensely as a hobby just wasn't doing it for me career wise. I like riding and spending time at the stables, but not so much that I want to get up every day at 6am in order to muck out a dozen stables before breakfast.

2) Ask employers what sort of qualifications / experience they look for in potential employees. I did a masters in Equine Business, and before i signed up, asked the uni whether graduates were sought by employers. Of course they assured me in no uncertain terms that they were. However, about two weeks into the course it became very clear that the horse world couldn't care less whether you have a masters in business - all they want to know is whether you can muck out 12 stables before breakfast, and hopefully make the books balance. I'm still paying off the debts from that masters, seven years later. :-(

Best of luck though. It took me YEARS to figure out what i wanted to do. I tried pretty much everything under the sun. I've now found a job I love, but fell into it almost by accident. So it does click eventually!

Thank you for everybodies replies!

I have worked on a yard previous to my admin job. I really enjoyed it, definatley wouldn't want to just work on a yard though as a groom etc. I think I would like to be more involved in horses in nutrition/ breeding/ rehabilitation type of area.

I only changed jobs to get some experience away from horses and it has given me the chance to get a qualification outside of horses.

I did think about working with 'troubled teens' and horses and my old riding instructor does something similiar and although its challanging she says she loves it.

I suppose I am just pretty impaitent and hate feeling like I am doing nothing or not progressing forwards. I have e-mailed a few organisations asking for info etc. and I suppose I will take it from there.
As long as whatever I do I can pay for my two im sorted, thanks guys :)
