I'm sixteen, nearly leaving school and then planning to go to college and uni :)

I have a horse on loan who I plan to keep for as long as I can through my a-levels but I know it'll be difficult espeicalliy since I've picked maths, physics, chemistry and biology!!

Eventually I want to be a vet, but I just want a career that means I'll be able to buy a horse and regularly compete.

Does anybody have any idea how being an equine vet fits in with owning and competing??

Hi Emma, firstly good luck with your A levels and getting to vet school.

I have two friends who are vets (small animal, not equine) and they both have horses. They are able to manage by keeping the horses on full livery and at yards with floodlit schools. Still not easy - some nights they don't finish work until after 7, but still go to the yard and ride. For nights/ weekends when they are on call, the livery yard takes full care of the horses.

I imagine equine vets will work similar hours, but why don't you see if you can do some work experience over the holidays. It will give you an idea of how the job is, and will help with your uni application.

Good luck. x
