I'm thinking about putting down strips of old carpet in my stable.....
My stable has rubber mats throughout and I am currently using shavings with wood pellets under. However I am thinking about putting down a base of straw then carpet then topping with shavings. Hoping that the wet goes through the carpet into the straw. I know I will need to replace the carpet every few weeks but wondering if it will save money, or maybe I've just mad🤣

Please don’t.
Manky will be the least of it!

The only place in a stable for carpet is on a door to deaden the sound of a horse kicking it.
Yep, I have a piece of carpet looped over a chain across the door so it's 2 layers thick, I've also had to use it above the door to stop my horse whacking his head on the lintel.

That will absolutely stink!!

We have a wood pellet base and then a big straw bed on top. It works really well actually, I wasn't keen on the idea till we tried it and its great for wetter horses. Periodically dig out and replace the straw pellets.

Straw, then carpet, then shaving? However did you come up with that??

I have rubber mats topped with shavings then topped with straw. I do this because straw is warmer and more comfortable than shavings but is now harder to get hold of so I put shavings underneath because it helps the staw last better because the wet goes through the straw and is soaked up by the shavings. This means I only need to dig it up and take the wet out once a week and less often if she's spending less time in.

😳

If you want to absorb the pee under a bed (without costing a fortune) try replacing your pellet base with sawdust.

I have rubber mats, a good sprinkling of sawdust in the middle - gelding - (£6ish a sack, sack lasts me 2 weeks) ... then straw on top to a depth of about 40cms.
Muck out down to the sawdust each day, remove & replace sawdust, pull clean straw back over.
Two bales of straw a week (@£4) max, so per-weekly cost for the bed is about £11 or £12.

OMG! I can smell it from here, very very bad idea.
🤣🤣
OP my beds got better when I took up the rubber mats. I have a big, wet mare in a stable which is a bit small (but she kicked off when I suggested moving...)

Bed of wood pellets & aubiose and it's the driest and least smelliest she's been.
