carpet to stop mud?

Have seen online that some people use old carpet to stop mud in gateways etc. Is this a good idea and if so where do you get old carpet?

I tried it, it sank and also slid under foot.

Works really well for me so long as you put it down before the mud gets deep.

I have used old axminster in a deep gateway with one unshod horse (big) using the gate and yes it really did help and it lasted well.

Doubt it would work with a herd of horses though.

Hessian backed carpet can do a good job and place it hessian side up, but def not the nylon and foam backed stuff as gets v slippery and sinks quickly.
