to ask H&H, and the Daily Mail, to do a story about them, with Before and After photos? Daily Mail does love an animal story...
it would be excellent publicity for Bransby, who really have done an amazing job, plus as an educational tool for the general public, some of whom obviously do still think that it's alright for a horse to look shockingly emaciated because "he's old"... jeez, if a VET can think this... *words fail me*
someone posted on the other thread that they don't think they'd have made it through this weather etc... too right, no way would they have.
just makes me wonder how many other horses there are out there whose plight is being ignored because the owners use the excuse that "old horses can't keep weight on" etc...
thoughts? should I ask Admin?

sunds a fantastic idea.

i have totally the opposite problem in cold weather as the oldie (29 next month) gets overweight as he eats evereything including the hedgeing!!
Age should not be used as an excuse, but i do know of older horses that are hard to keep weight on (and a few younger ones).

Yeah! Sounds fab!

Also I think part of the responsibility of owning an older horse is to ensure s/he doesn't loose too much weight, so rather than leaving them in a field and saying 'oh they're thin because they're old' people should give feed/hay, rug up lots, ensure horse has access to shelter etc. Not saying anyone on here would ever harm a horse like that but it saddens me to think that horses and ponies that, in their prime, served as amazing animals and helped us out loads, but when they get old the roles should be reversed, it's only fair.

As you can tell I've got an older pony!! =P xx

Kerrlli - good idea - it may help to send much needed funds to our welfare charities - they must be having a lean time of it at the min. I know i feel like cancelling my direct debit for a couple of months after the enormus hay bill i have encounted over the last few weeks BUT if i do i know i will some how never get round to renewing again.

An article like this may just help people from stopping there giving

Definitely- older horses can really struggle to keep the weight on, but as the owner its up to you to make sure they do and if you aren't prepared to then owning any horse is not for you.

That's a really good idea! I can't believe the state of those poor horses, words fail me!

Saying that old horses can't put weight on is no excuse. I have the opposite problem, trying to prevent Ted from gaining any weight is a major challenge and he's 18. Obviously there are horses that struggle to keep weight on but those horses were skeletal!

Publicity is also much needed for re-homing centres, especially considering what an amazing job they do. It doesn't get recognised nearly enough.

Yes, definitely a good idea, especially if they could highlight the fact that this is likely to be a worse than usual problem this year as owners feel the credit crunch. I know that all rescue centres are taking in more animals than usual this year and this would be a good opportunity to reinforce a few messages and, hopefully, raise some funds.
