I am old - I started riding before most houses had a landline, so end up very bemused when there is so much advice about riding with a mobile phone. So my question is : If you had an accident - who would you call, and how would they find you?

depends, if horse and I parted company I would call the Police on a non emergency number to let them know my details in case somebody calls in about the horse

In an emergency 999 of course

Other than that, Yard Owner maybe (as horse tend to find their way home)

I'm old too. But I do carry a phone. When I came off (I knew my arm was broken badly) I called 999. Fortunately I also called a friend who got there before the ambulance and also found the horse. That was a few years ago. I think now they can find you from your GPS signal (but haven't tried this!). I used to ride for years though before such technology existed. These days everyone wants to remove all risk from life - and most of the fun!

my mum and dad, even at 30 haha! but thats because my dad is the shoot owner/game keeper where I ride, so he'd be able to find the horse somewhere on the farm! and a friend if they were at the yard! then maybe the police if I was close to a road?

I learned from this forum to ring 112 so they can find you, thanks elsiecat.. I was riding with my daughter, disaster happened, we both fell off...both horses turned & galloped for home, we weren't seriously injured BUT... my iPhone had been in my pocket and it flew down the bank as I fell off, massive amount of grass/undergrowth. Horses were ok, we went back 5 times to find my phone, rang it (it fell to silent on landing) last ditch attempt we rang it in the dark and JUST saw it light up after 5 hours of searching, 15 feet from where I fell. Since then I ordered an arm holder for my phone. Best thing EVER, £2.49 off ebay. Please use them everyone, it could have been a different story had one of us been really badly injured..

My friend and YO who knows all the hacks where I go so would be able to find me and or horse if I was injured and it wasn't an emergency.

999 if it were an emergency.

Carry phone in on silent or vibratemode if worried it may frighten horse if it rings.
If THE PHONE is ON the emergency services can pinpoint it by signals sent from two points (triangulation).
if phone is out of it's network signal area it goes on to emergency only mode this means that if any network picks up the signal, it will contact the emergency number.112 or 999 IF YOU DIAL IT
texting takes less signal power so if you cannot get a signal send a text.

the emergency services recomend that you put an emergency number in the directory under I.C.E (In Case of Emergency) so it can be found easily by anyone who finds you.
(one of the over 50s)

Probably my friend who lives at the yard, and the farmer as I tend to hack round the farm so they could hopefully find my horse! 112 if I was hurt as someone else said they can find you more easily that way.

Just to clear up the 999/112 myth, 112 was introduced over here as it is more common on the continent so was meant for european consistency, it never had anything to do with tracing :)

Mine is always in a zipped pocket in my hi-viz waistcoat or hi-viz Jacket & on vibrate only so I am not distracted when riding - friend had a nasty off when she stopped to answer a call & whilst on phone her horse mega-spooked & she came off as was too relaxed in the saddle.

I'd call husband if in a very tight spot, but more likely if out locally I'd call 1 or other of the local YO's who know the area well.

TFF, a luddite who has a phone only for phoning & texting :)

With injuries 999 first, followed by my friend at the yard or yard owner to come deal with the horse for me and to help emergency services find me as they know the area and I'd be calling my mom :-)
Without injuries probably just a friend or yard owner to come and help find the horse if necessary but my mare would stop and look at you in wonder as to why you're on the floor

If I was hurt I would ring 999 then a friend probably as my mum is useless at answering her phone. In fact when I did get hurt, I tried ringing her and when she didn't answer I had to walk the mile back to the yard with my knee swelling and a naughty pony.

Fell off on the road back in April, couldn't move my legs so rang my mum who was at the yard. At the time, I didn't think of calling 999! My friend had ridden off to catch my pony and left me in the road....

I have my Iphone with me at all times. If anything was to happen and I was unable to use my phone it has a tracker on it, that my OH can set off so it sounds an alarm. So not only can I be pin pointed on a map, you can hear my phone as well.

King has a dog tag on his saddle and bridle, with his name, OH's number and area where he lives. I would ring OH, OH's mother or my friend. If an emergency I would ring 999.
