used to do quite a few paintings for friends, and friends of friend, havent for a while, but recently people have been asking for some, i used to charge bout 70-80 for a painting, which prob take me a couple of weeks and be a decent size, now clairs post got me thinking, and i wondered if my prices were accurate or not, so what would you pay for something like this..

My o/h is an artist but you would never know it if you saw our house - hardly any paintings as he never gets round to it (he is a teacher)
Unfortunatly he cant 'do' horses so in order for me to get a portrait done i would need to commision someone!
I would be interested to know what the going rate was.
Did those really take you 2 weeks? how long per day? i think all that depends on how much you charge! also being well known makes a difference!

Portraits of my horses range from £300 - £800 - they are all A3 (I would guess) and range in what they are done with - the nicest is a pastel one (I think it is pastel) the artist framed it for us and said don't take it out because it will smudge!!
Don't know if that helps - average at just over £500 each!

Look on the equine art guild - www.equineartguild.com - it lists equine artists from all over the world. The society of equine artists is another good one - www.equestrianartists.co.uk (maybe .com)

TBH prices vary a huge deal - I only ever charge up to £100 for a commission and it comes down to the amount of 'subjects' in the picture, size etc. A head portrait on A3 size I usually do for about £60-£70, where as I have seen some artists works which I dont think are as good as others yet they charge more (hundreds). I do most of mine in graphite or pastel...so generally not as pricey as an oil painting would be.
