Tucker continues to NOT read out the breeding on horses.

So, for those who are interested, Cassabachus who was this year's runner up and last year's winner of the Hickstead Derby, is by Candillo Z out of a Bachus mare. Candillo Z is himself by Cassini I (one of the big 5 Holsteiners) out of the sister of Flemmingh (stamm 3558). Of 121 daughters, Candillo Z has 11 state premiums and 9 approved sons.

Thank you! I was actually wonder as what a jumper! If he had't of aimed at the post he would of been clear poor Geoff.

I watch with the sound turned down anyway. I wait for steve Hadley to say "He'll be no mugs companion" and that's it...the sound goes off....usually takes about 2 mins!
Don't get me started on Mike Tuckers efforts.
There are so many good voices out there that just need a chance.

can I also add one of the 3rd placed horses, was Scottish Born & bred

Volcano ridden by Douglas Duffin. Bred by the Gillespie Bros, Tornado (Darco) x Voltaire x Lucky Boy xx. he is an 8yr, one to watch for the future me thinks

Well I like Mike Tucker , I agree that for those who want technical detail he is a bit limited in his information but for those that want to be entertained he is fab. Last year at Olympia something went wrong and he had to so some serious infill chat. Pulled it off really well. Besides who else is there !!

To be fair, do the commentators actually have that sort of information to hand? The running lists produced by Hickstead are very lacking in breeding info and in some cases there's virtually no info at all about the horse. Sometimes all you get is "gelding"! And,again, to be fair, a lot of people aren't particularly interested in breeding. I am and get told off for being boring . . . . .

I quite like Mike Tucker and Steve Hadley, at least they have been there and done it and they're certainly a million times better than that Peter Churchill on Eurosport (now don't get me started on him, I definitely turn off his commentary)

I would imagaine the BBC cater for those interested the thrills and spills of the sport and suppose that it is felt that the majority of people who watch the derby on television are not interested in the breeding of the competing horses. Unless you are into bloodlines and such the names of the sire/dam will mean nothing to you.

BTW anyone know the breeding of the winner?

I think Tim Stockdale should be used more and probably will in time.
MT seems to love the sound of his own voice and very often rambles on regardless of what's actually going on on screen,
He is ok at filling in breakdown situations, but so are others.
I just feel that there needs to be a fresh injection of voices to present the equestrian programmes.
Claire Balding is an excellent main presenter on a sports progamme, Tim worked really well with her yesterday and he could easily co-host.
Have a look at the way the Canadians package their programmes. They are slick, tightly edited and you can tell there's a huge load of time, effort and knowledge gone into the production in the suites/trucks before they go to air.
It takes time to bring on new presenters who have the confidence in front of the camera, or talk into a lipmike for 2 hours without rambling. If you listen to riders being interviewed there are some who could, if encouraged properly, have a future commentating. Douglas Duffin, David Macpherson are 2 off the top of my head.
Sky is nurturing some new talent, they will have a good bank of equestrian presenters soon. but BBC just seem to stick to the same old same old. I'd like to hear two different voices by the time 2012 comes along, but i doubt that will happen.
Back to Ken's original question ..
dislaying the breeding could be done quite easily on screen, The strap that is used to display the Horses Name could quite easily, in a smaller font below have the Sire and Dams name on it too....ie:
......... CASSABACHUS
........ Candillo Z/ Bachus
all that would need is an early request to the producer and some one to help co-ordinate the info for the graphics op. to type up during their prep for the programme. Most continental productions have that as a matter of course.

Who is sky ' nurturing then' I do like Tim Stockdale though, some of the big names in jumping in particular just don't have enough of a personality to pull off tv work ( am thinking of Robert Smith on Only fools on horses)

Sorry, I'm not dissing Mike Tucker in any way on what he says and how he says it, he is superb although there is the "Tucker kiss of death". He isn't really the problem. The breeding is available 9 times out of 10, I sat reading the breeding at Olympia on the starting order and that's what they had in the commentators box.

Regarding the need, ALL racing progams discuss the sire and dam sire as a matter of course, it's so much a part of what they talk about, that you sometimes don't notice it for that reason. If racing people are interested, then sports horse people will be for the same reasons.

And another of the third placed horses was English-bred. The super mare Animation (by Animo) was bred by my friend Caroline O'Hara (formerly Thomas) at New Priory Stud, but she got so fed up with not being acknowldged as the breeder when horses she bred won (which was quite often, especially as she stood stallions such as Chairman, Qua Vadis, Vechta, Marsoom, Ulster and Dundee at stud and had a very good band of mares) that she sold up and is now living in the Bahamas.

So well done UK journalists, commentators and show organisers for not giving this sort of info out.

Of course had not WW done as Lewis Hamilton and lost it at the key moment, Annie could well have been in the final jump off and then it would really have been interesting!

I agree with you Ciss, Annie was on for winning the class yesterday. I think they are definately worth putting a large wad on for next year! William won't do that again, poor guy!
Caroline bred some fantastic horses.

Wondered if she was by Animo, suppose it was the name that made me think. Thought she was a lovely mare, shame about the last, I don't jump and even I could see what William did wrong. Felt a bit sorry for him but he'll know for next time.

One of the third placings went to the eight year old SSH gelding Volcano (Tornado x Voltaire x Lucky Boy)
owned by Julia McLelland, ridden by Douglas Duffin bred by the Gillespie Brothers. Oops just noticed you have already posted the news Libra...........
