As per the title really she has improved a little still has strong pulses in the front and none that I can find in the rear.

Cassie now has 2 imprints on in front we will wait till Thursday before seeing if she requires them on the hinds or if she only requires frog support pads & aluminium shoes.
And if all goes well she will have X-Rays in 4 weeks time if she continues to improve obviously if she doesn't she will be X-Rayed sooner I just hope she continues to go in the right direction.

Here are some pics not the best as she is on shavings.

Does this look like a horse that would be a candidate for Acute laminitis??(its a myth that only fat horses and ponies get it

Hi Darkangel, know exactly what you're going through, my 18 year old gelding came down with Laminitis in all four feet just over a week ago. Thankfully at the moment we are keeping him fairly comfortable on bute and ACP but the vet has said today that if he gets any worse he may have to have imprint shoes. Its such a worry isn't it?? How is Cassie coping? Benji seems to have resigned himself to box rest at the moment and as long as he gets a regular grooming session & lots of love and pampering he seems quite happy!!

Laminitis treatment has come on so much though since my cushingoid mare developed it over 4 years ago so at least thats something to be thankful for. Its just so heartbreaking and i hope Cassie continues to make a steady recovery. Sending her lots of get well thoughts and if you want to chat to someone who is going through it too, im only a PM away.

Thank you I hope your boy continues to improve too.

The vet was called Friday when I found her she was hopping lame in front,it was only when I went to bring her and her back wasn't co ordinating with the front did I start to panic.Anyway long story short diagnosed on Sunday with acute Laminitis strong pulse in all 4 feet. 2 bute morning,1 bute evening plus 1 1/2 ml of sedalin 3 times daily. I spoke to the vet today who said I can reduce the sedalin to 1/2ml 3 times a day now so at least I can see if the shoes are working rather than the dope masking the pain.

Cassie seems really calm at the moment although she is used to box rest when she was 6 months old she fractured her rear cannon bone at 5 she caught strangles at stud so had to stay there for 5 months until the all clear.
Then when I thought I had had all the bad luck she hit 8 yrs old she had to have keyhole surgery in her stifles to repair damage from when she fell on the lunge another 6 months. So I guess she thinks she really is a stable horse really LOL!!

How much hay are you giving yours at the moment I'm really worried about her weight she has lost a fair bit already and as she wasn't fat to start with very unsure what to do about it. She is have year before last hay soaked so it has little or no value to it but that won't keep some of the weight on???
Any thoughts

Hope your horse improves soon. I know how much of a worry it is - we had imprint shoes put on mine when he had laminitis (he was also not fat). Mine was unsound for an entire year and we almost had to make 'the decision' a few times but he pulled through and we've never looked back! So there is light at the end

How long has she had laminitis?

Ouch, you have both been through the mill by the sounds of it, your rapid response has surely saved Cassie. Do you have any idea what triggered the laminitis as she is not fat at all? What an awful worry for you.

My Fred went down with it 3 years ago (usual over weight etc) and its a constant battle and worry. The weather we are having atm is perfect lami conditions (so the vets tell me).

Sending you (and benjis_girl) lots of healing vibes xx

I'm glad your horse made it after all that time. It is such a worry isn't I hope catching so soon is in her favour,I can only hope...

She has had it since Friday confirmed on Sunday after orginally treating her for abscesses in 2 feet so only a few days so a long way to go yet.

Thank you vibes are most welcome !!
Again its the weather its making the grass grow like made my vet is of the same opinion plus she was very stressy for a few days before hand alot of pacing and whinning which I put down to being in season

that might of brought it on to. She was in a newer field but she has been in it before with no problem.I had even stripped grazed her and Sam her field companion so it wasn't like she had gone onto a lush pasture for her to pig out on.
She has never had any laminitis tendencies before and she has spent most of her life living out 24/7 very strange but I guess its was mostly to do with the rain and then the sunny period we had here.

I just keep giving Benji small haynets of soaked hay at regular intervals throughout the day. Im fortunate because i keep my horses at home and work from home so i just keep nipping out to check on him. I also give him the odd bucket of Hi Fi Lite to slow him down when he hasn't got any hay left.

Benji is slightly overweight rather than underweight, he was looking great until we had all this wet weather and he piled on a bit of weight despite very restricted grass intake. So im trying to diet him a bit at the minute by taking the odd handful out of each net.

I hope Cassie goes on ok, let me know how she progresses won't you??

I keep mine at home too its very handy isn't it when you have to do things like this not to mention the good times.I have just back from giving her another dose of sedalin and small haynet she was really pleased to see me but I guessing its just the hay she wants really!!.
So Hi Fi lite is ok thats good as I have a whole bag of that already. So just a couple of scoops should do it then? just as a supplement.

Plus keep me posted of your progress too, fingers crossed and big hugs for you and Benji

Yeah i just fill a rubber skip of Hi Fi Lite and leave him with it for a couple of hours. Hes not too keen on it so eats it really slowly and its lami approved too so its all good!!

My vet said today anything thats Laminitis approved is fine in moderation. I just think the Hi Fi gives him a bit of variation and he can't gobble it all up as fast as he does with his hay.

Big hugs to you and Cassie too!! Speak soon Becca & Benji x

I hope Cassie improves. My Icelandic who has Cushings had an acute attack of laminitis 18 months ago. Imprint shoes literally saved him and he still has to have them. Hope you find they help Cassie just as much. sending you hugs

Feed one slice of soaked hay every 4 hours

If your horse could be suffering from Cushings then ask your vet to put it on one Pergolide 250 microgram every day.

Lamanitis can be brought on by a number of things including emerging encysted red worms.

Definatly not cushing not showing any other clinical signs yet.

I thought emerging worms caused colic so I have learned somthing new today I shall ask my vet about it,plus get a worm count done.Although she is on a regular worming programme and always has been throught her life I also poo pick every day but you never know.

Thanks for the hugs I shall pass them on to Cassie.

Is your Iceladic not sound without them or is it just to provide added support to his feet ? sorry to be nosey just want to find out all I can about it especially the after care.

Agree with giving her something else to nibble on rather than just hay - like Hi-Fi Lite in a big tub trug. I gave this to mine and I think it helped keep his spirits up as he wasn't quite so bored! I think that 1/2 the battle is keeping them cheerful as I think they heal a lot faster if they are. Lots of grooming and stimulation (play games etc. - like Id hide tiny amounts of high fibre nuts under things and make them stretch for them etc.). If she's meant to be box rested for some time then depending on how she's dealing with it, I think its nice to have a tiny area outside their stable fenced off if you can - although from the pic it looks like she's in an indoor barn? Mine was in a usual stable and because he was ill for so long and hated being stabled he began getting depressed, so we gated off a bit of the yard (had no grass on it, just dirt) which made him 10 times happier as he could choose to be inside on his bedding or outside.

Mine got lami from concussion, well so we think anyway as Id been doing quite a bit of road work leading up to it, so Ive always blamed myself. But I guess you never really know for sure.

Good luck, keep positive and it sounds like you've caught it early which is definately excellent news. x
