Hi all. Just wondering now the flies have arrived. Are horses with cataracts ok to wear fly masks? I read somewhere that it hinders their vision but not sure how much truth there is in this.

Also is it thought good practice to use something with us protection for horses with such issues?
Thanks

I have one with cataracts and if he didn't wear a fly mask he would be in trouble with very sore red eyes,
this may not be due to the cataracts but just his own reaction to flies
I use Cashel fly mask for him as it stays put but I checked it first to make sure visibility was good,
I put it on my own head :)

I had one with cataracts but fly masks were not around much then. I would try and get a Guardian mask if I were you http://www.horsemask.com/

I used those for night time and the guardian in field you know the best place to clean them is in the shower while your in it has the hot water cleans it well and you can let it drip after :D

My night blind horse has a uv mask that blocks out a lot of the daylight. I take it off to lead to / from the field after she jumped a puddle once (I think she saw the reflection) & nearly squashed me, but in the field they tend to find their way round even with limited sight. If your cataract one is in a field she's familiar with them she should be fine.
