I am thinking of buying a Mare by Catherston Dougal. I understand he was gelded at 8years old. I wanted to find out some information about him, other than his pedigree which I can find. As he no longer stands at stud, it is hard to track down photo's etc.

Does anyone have any information about him, or photo's ?

Hi Tracey
I bought a mare out of Catherston Dougal 2 years ago. Her dam was Gainsborough Melanie from the TB stud (foster mum).

Catherston Dougal was given to Desi Dillingham by Jenny Lorriston-Clarke, then he was eventually sold on. He is currently on one of the Spanish Islands at a dressage establishment.

I was told he was 'cut quite early' because he had a bit of a willful streak. Though he could do a very nice dressage test of course.

Lucy Farrar seemed to have him for a while, and had been competing on him.

I would be interested to know if you bought the mare, and what she looks like.

Photos of Catherston Dougal seem to be non existant, I only have a scanned in version out of the stud brochure.

Hope this helps.
Beryl

Hello,
I also have a gelding by Catherston Dougal and Melanie and I would really like to get some information on both. He has a bit of streak in him -very highly strung, so I wanted to research his background, especially knowing he was a December foal!
-any information would be really great

Gosh, what an old post :)

I only knew Dougal as a gelding (aged about 10) and tbh, I wouldn't have wanted to know him as a stallion!! Willful, obstinate, strong willedand opinionated! Bold and in your face, with a MASSIVE sense of humour and only liked certain people (he had little respect for small people). Gorgeous mover, with one heck of a pop in him - far better as a gelding IME

I saw him a few times, initally with a catherston rider at winter nationals (litterally ages ago). He's a light is bay, very plain looking, not very falshy but moves quite well. He looked quite rideable at nationals. Coped really with the atmosphere compared to a lot, not spooky.

I saw him with lucy farrer a few times. He looked much stronger and was doing a very decent psg. Was showing some of the GP stuff. Starting to look smartish, I think lucy said he was a bit quirky, can't remember but he's always looked placid and been very well behaved whenever I saw him.

Thank you both for all the information, it seemed impossible to find anything on the internet about him now he is gelded -he sounds very much like my gelding brought from Lynn Russell: good paces and a big jump but temperamental, although always good at shows

I'm not 100% sure (and don't have the book at hand) but have a feeling he was mentioned/had photographs in JL-C's 'Breaking and Training' book :)

Hi, I have another of the Gainsborough Stud products by Catherston Dougal. Zebedee is 7 years old by Dougal out of Jigsaw, a coloured cob mare.

I have been led to believe that Gainsborough had 3 coloured cob mares which were put in foal to a Catherston stallion each year as the two studs were geographically very close. The cob mares would have been used as foster mares for any of the TBs if needed and the cob x foals reared by hand.

Zebedee is everything you could wish for - the calmness of the cob coupled with the sport horse. He has done riding club dressage and affiliated show jumping. He is a joy to own, took me a year to find and at 5 years old I was doubtful he was what I was looking for (i have a sport horse stud and top class competition horses and have competed to a high level myself but at pension age I did not find them enjoyable hacks on those nice days when you feel like a ride!) He is perfect. Quiet for me, a superb escort for our young horses and a competition horse for my staff to play with. I was so lucky to find him and I have received many offers to buy him but he is not available while I still occasionally want to ride!!

My friend has 2 geldings by Catherston Dougal, they are a year apart in age but very different.
One is out of a mare called Sugar, can't remember Sugar what is a few years since i saw her.
The younger gelding when i last saw her was 4, bay with a white face and 4 white socks and about 17.2, he could be very chilled out but was fairly in your face.
The older one was about 16.3 and much chunkier and had proper attitude

Thank you so much for all the information, it is all very interesting and useful to know! Apologies for such a late reply!
I think it must be Gainsborough Melanie, he was fostered as well, looks like our horses may be brother and sister, I'd love to know what your mare looks like!
