Hi
We are currently searching for a merry cocker pup to join our family. I am worried about my 2 cats though. I am worried they will end up leaving home. I would be devastated.

What is the best way to introduce a pup to my cats without them feeling like they have been turfed out?

Any advice greatly appreciated

Don't throw them in at the deep end, let them take it at their own pace, perhaps crate the puppy at first so the cats can approach when they feel like it or have an area where the cats can go to get away and get a bit of peace and quiet from playful puppy.
 
As CC suggests, puppy could ideally be done with being crate trained, to give time out for the cats and for the pup to see the cats in a calm manor rather than running....away from it:D as long as the cats have escape, for this u can baby gate the stairs and kill 2 birds with one stone, 1, stop the pup getting up them, 2, Give the cats somehwere to escape.

It has been about 6 years since I lost my Boxer and didn't have the cats then so this is new territory for me mixing Cats and dogs :-o

I will definitley crate train and hope I still have the baby gate in the garage from my old dog. Will be good if the Cats can have the upstairs as their own.

Has anyone ever experienced losing cats due to a new pup?
 
Nope!
My two hooligans, after years of trying, actually managed to catch one of ours three weeks ago, had an end each and were pulling at her :o until my fella dropped his half.
Cat was fine, got out of the vets a day later and STILL parades up and down in front of them, knowing they can't get at her, cheeky wench!!!

Our last bitch was fabby with cats, though.

I was in a simular position to you in feb, I got a ten week cocker pup to join my three cats, two under a year and one who is 2yo.
It has worked well, Winston is crated at night and not allowed upstairs or on the sofas, where the cats are alllowed, this gives them space to get out of his way
To start with two of them hated him and beat him up. The other always wanted to play with him. One went on strike and dissapeared for the first night.
He did sometimes chase them in the gardern but the cats can soon jump out of his way.
Now they have settled al together two like him and will let him stand on top of them, strange dog. The other the older cat will hunt him and hit him from the sofas. The cats will often have crazy fights and chases round the house, winston looks confused when this happens.
It has worked really well cats will happily sleep on the floor when winston is around which i am very happy with!

Thanks for the advice and great pics! There is hope for my cats then! Will keep you updated on my search for my pup and what happens if and when I finally bring the pup home!
