Yes, vey sad. Breckenbrough have cancelled as well, through lack of entries.
It is a shame when venues get the ground as good as they can, but people still can't prepare/train /fitten safely on concrete ground.
I do think the insurance is a factor too. Venues need to knw they have anough entries in good time to know if they are viable, but no one wants to enter before the last possible minute, because horses love to go lame /plans have to change for whatever reason. It is a real catch 22 at the moment.
Breckenbrough have cancelled their unaffiliated event - the BE event ran a couple of weeks ago. Catton should have cancelled last year - the SJ was virtually under water and the XC was carnage with horses slipping all over the place so I’m not particularly surprised that they didn’t get enough entries this year…
I think it’s an ironic/unfortunate outcome of the ‘good weather’.
Everyone has managed to get all their spring runs in due to the dry weather (whereas previous few years have been disastrous). So no one is desperate for runs. The prolonged dry has meant that venues are inevitably running on the firmer side and therefore people are starting to think of saving legs until the rain comes.
I also think we have a lot of choice. Ascott I think is a scheduling issue as less than a month ago two events with Cotswold cup and BE. Plus the ridiculous Aston saw something like 1000 horses over 5 days which will mean a lot don't need a run. We have a terrible May calendar in SW but an amazing June one with a crazy amount of choice and decisions will need to be made. I could run every weekend in June, and on some weekends twice with different events within 2 hours. I haven't even entered anything and have two horses. I am enjoying not seeing my bank account wither and die. I do need to get organised at some point but I am not feeling it right now. Going SjIng is a lot easier. Grassroots BE is the one most impacted. The big pros are away at all the big internationals and Cotswold Cup has hit BE very hard.
