Feeling a bit sad as my lovely homebred lad got caught in a wire fence out hunting on Saturday. I feel bad that I didn't see the damn wire (single strand) and that he was upset as he is so trusting. Thankfully, I think he is OK; one leg is a bit puffy but he isn't lame/cut or anything, so hoping he is OK... but I feel so fed up with myself for not seeing it and then for not getting off more quickly, I sat there wondering what to do instead of jumping straight off...ever had one of those seasons when every day something seems to go wrong?

Yup Dogstar, I know exactly what you are talking about. As Bert said, don't beat yourself up, it happens. It is so difficult to react the right way in a split second, although I always beat myself up for doing the wrong thing. You never know, your next day might be amazing, and suddenly memories of all the bad days will fade right away!

I did exactly the same my first day out this season. It was a great big piece of sheep wire lying on the ground and I didn't spot it. Fortunately my chap is SO sensible and he didn't panic and I jumped off just in time before anything nasty happened. I got him out, but lost the reins in the process and he went trotting off towards the road! A lovely lady caught him just in time thank goodness, legged me back up and all was well. We have so much wire round us it is so frustrating. A hedge wired up to the nines (which I shouldn't have gone near, but everyone else had jumped it!!) tripped us up on my second day out and we both fell and I got a hoof between the eyes. Not nice. I really was not enjoying my hunting til Saturday when I had a lovely day out!

Keep going, hopefully the second half of your season will be better than the first.

Thanks, I feel better for sharing and for the sensible advice :) I too was rescued by a kind person who jumped off, but I hope I act more quickly next time instead of just sitting there, though it probably was only seconds.

Ah that's kind; actually my boy I was talking about is a dapple grey IDxTB, he is stunning though I say so myself :) The profile pic is of my 2 year old who is an Irish Draught x Knabstrupper with very unusual markings and a lovely temperament. I suspect she may go grey, but I don't mind so long as she turns into a good hunter :) Thanks again.

I hate wire... Its the scourge of modern hunting. The second (and thankfully the last) injury Ron has ever had hunting with me was from wire, but tbh it was a case of I told him so - He threw a tantrum about being made to wait while someone shut a gate, bunny hopped and landed with one front leg going down along barbed wire. He was very lucky to get away with only a few scratches - but if he'd stood quietly like I asked it wouldn't have happened!

don't worry about it too much, I'm sure you'll be more vigilant next time, so hugs and carrots should see him right! :)
