My TB Mare has sweetitch. She does not have the classic mane or tail irritation. She bites her chest, shoulders and flanks, and her belly gets very badly affected. Last year, very late in the season my vet suggested I try Cavalesse, because in October she was still very itchy. I did not see any effect but I know you are supposed to start it before the midges appear, so I saved it until this year for a proper trial.
Firstly, my mare does not like the taste of it - it's very bitter (I tasted it). She will not eat it on bread, or sugar lumps as they suggest. Putting on a handful of nuts does not work either, so I squirt it into her mouth, which is what my vet's receptionist does for her ponies.
She has now been having it for 1 month. She has started to bite her shoulders and has rubbed her forehead bald - which is a new place...
I will continue using it again this month. Has anyone else used it and had noticeable results ?
