So my trimmer advised me to get some size 2 Cavallo Simple boots for my TB mare. They arrived today, so I tried them tonight. While the hoof size seems good - they just popped on and didn't rotate or anything, the gap around the pastern is huge! I tried the gaiters which came with them and they were next to useless as they just rode up and weren't actually big enough so they just ended up scrunched around the pastern area. So I took my sock off (sports type sock) and put that on her hoof, but the gap around her pastern is still really big. Anyone had experience of these boots and how they fit please? Photos if possible would be good.
Are there any gaiters/wraps which would be better than the useless ones which came with the boots? I've had a look at the easyboots, but her measurements don't seem to fall into any of their sizes - she has fairly round feet.
Thanks

When you put the gaiters on hook the elastic strap under the heel then they stay put, and when you do up the boot push the tongue against the wall of the hoof the stick the velcro together, my horse has navicular and I too have this problem with a bit of a gap, but they have never rubbed, best piece of advice I had from Cavallo themselves was to dunk the boots in a bucket of water for a few minutes on the first use only, it really softens them and they mould to the horses foot shape better!

Thanks Snopuma but I don't really know what you mean. These are the gaiters that came with the boots - they are bell shaped - similar to an over reach boot and fasten similar to a velcro over reach boot, but they're not even wide enough to fasten - there are no straps to go under the foot....

the gap round the pastern is normal - allows movement etc.
I bought easycare pastern wraps from hyperdrug - they have a flat solid rubber type thing that is hoof shaped and that goes under the hoof, then neoprene comes up the back of the heel and wraps round the pastern thus preventing rubbing but they stay put as there is the bit to go under the hoof.
I also had trouble with the supplied pastern wraps - even when getting the elasticated part under the heel, it would ride up. Sounds like your ones are far too small if not going round the hoof and able to meet - they do have some give in though so try to stretch ??

Don't worry about the gap at all, if the boot fits and doesn't spin round then you won't have any problems, they are not supposed to fit snug to the pastern and if they did then they would rub like hell with movement. I never use the wraps, cheap thick bed socks from Primark do the job much better.

The pastern wraps are useless, they do that on my horse and when I googled it is apparently a problem for most people! Someone suggested the Mac version of ones which I've been meaning to try, or a sock like you have done.

On my horses, there is very little room around, maybe about a finger width, theres a video on cavello website which shows them fitting one on which might give you a better idea? :)

the easy care ones on hyperdrug are the old mac style ones - i think the old mac ones now have cavallo type pastern wraps as far as i know

My Cavallos rubbed just above the coronet band on my first 20 min walk out last week so I used mens socks today and they just fell down! By the time we got back the sock was down inside the boot. Guess I need to be looking for thicker, more elasticated ones before next time
