Brought the horses up home this afternoon, as we normally do on a Sunday. It was Blue's first introduction to traffic and I had no idea how he was going to behave. He was fine on walk up (150 yards), very alert, very nosy, having a good neb at everything. He trotted round the garden, into everything, before settling and having a good graze.

When we went back to the field however, we were exposed to idiot drivers. A motorbike was coming up behind us at speed, despite there being a 30 mph limit. I made the 'slow down' hand gesture but he ignored me and went roaring past. Bless him, Blue didn't bat an eyelid. However, he did take exception to a large camper van that came past way too fast and way too close, despite me being dressed up in head to toe in hi viz. The stupid van nearly ended up with Blue embedded in its side as he swung round in a panic

Idiots.

Despite that, Blue was fab and I was very proud of him. He saw so many things that he hasn't seen before and took it all in his stride.

A couple of gratuitous pics of Blue:

Now on to dear old Ellie

I am still worrying about her weight, or lack of. She is fit and healthy and very very shiny, but I can't seem to get weight on her. She is on max recommended daily allowance of Alpha A Oil, Speedibeet and 16+. The grazing is good. I know at 27 she isn't going to look her best but I need the weight on her before we go into winter. Here she is today:

And a pic of the two of them.

blue is so cute lol have you tried giving ellie her feeds more often but in smaller quantities like maybe splitting them in 3 breakfast, dinner and tea

Try a bit of Pink Powder in her feed. She looks like my big girl, and when I added this she really perked up and put a bit of weight on.

Hey - piccies look good - i'm having the same worries about Ali my 25yr old - I have him rugged and in at night with ad lib hay and a bucket of veteran mollichaff alongside his feeds and he has really come on. She is very shiny and the two look very happy!

I've heard about 'Old faithfuls special blend', not sure of the make, and apparantly did great for neighbours 35yr old arab..its a mashy sorta thing (i think) so is easy to get down them - Lol this 35yr old has no teeth

blue looks lovely.

Am sure a lot of people have had good results with the soft and soak range for putting on weight.

Just a thought but a lady at my yard has an elderly TB who she couldn't get the weight on after winter. She got the vet round did bloods and she had a high worm count. (it was a different type to the normal ones i believe so didn't get caught out in the normal worming program). Anyhow there was no signs of the usual potbelly and her coat was really shiney. But is now on treatment and already starting to put the weight back on!

I would highly recommend Spillers senior conditioning mix for oldies, and can't speak highly enough for the difference that topspec senior has made to my old girl.

She used to be hard to keep weight on... not any more!

Hi! Just a mention of your young horses first exposure to traffic. If i was you at this stage make sure he goes out in company with a good reliant horse in traffic, he sounds fab but a baby only needs an idiot to frighten it then you could have a problem.

He really needs tons of 'safe' sort of exposure to guarantee future traffic soundness! Its not you just the idiots on the road.

i would take her off the alfa a oi, i found it helped them to lose weight rather than gain it, as it has to much protein an they can absorb it, i have found that normal chaff with either old faithfuls (Allen and page btw) or calm and condition +pink powder works the best.

Blue is lovely

There are lots of products to help with weight gain, barley being a very good one. I have a mare who I just could not get any weight on, I had some milk pelletts that I did not need and started giving those, it works a treat, and it shouldn't upset the stomach as it is mild enough for new born foals with no bacteria in the gut.

I don't think she looks too bad for her age. I found that the nutrionists at Spillers were fab, so kind & helpful. I gather D & H are similar. It may well be worth ringing them & seeing what they can suggest to help?
