I bought this pony last year with severe sweet itch, he is four years old and has a strong pedigree. I hope to show him in the future. I know his neck is weak and he needs some work to build his muscles - I would appreciate any views on him please or any advice anyone can give re his conditioning etc

Scuse my scruffy non horsey husband, he was most reluctant to hold the pony!

Basics are good but he is a long way off of the show ring in both weight and muscle. He moves well, has a nice head he just needs more about him. Another year and he will be cracking.

He can move better than this when he gets excited

(I know thats not how you lunge but this was end of session so roller off, whip down and just moving for the camera, I hope no sound has come over with the video as I am proper heavy breathing :D)

He was an impulse buy but I am so pleased with him, he is the easiest going pony to work with, nothing has worried him so far

No expert on conformation but I have a little gelding very similar in shape, we had a go at a bronze Welsh medal show after receiving wonderful comments from judges last summer and always coming away from the ring placed highly and getting the odd championship ... we came 7 out of 7 LOL! Both palominos were placed at the bottom and i knew when I saw the*ponies in the same class our chances slim, they were far mmore cresty, rippled when they trotted compared to my little chap who looks fit.

At the end of the day though he behaved so well, he trotted nicely and other than the odd paw of the ground his behaviour was perfect.
 
His hindleg looks a little straight but it is very hard to tell from those pics so it may well be OK. His biggest problem is that doesn't look to have the best front. 'Two legs coming out of one hole' so to speak. However when he bodies up a bit this may well improve. Do remember that the 'perfect' pony has yet to be born, they all have one or two conformation issues so enjoy showing him :)
 
I agree with minesadouble, too narrow in the chest and a bit straight behind. TBH though unless you allow him to get obscenely fat and behave appallingly in hand there is no point showing a welshie. I went to a medal show last year and was disgusted. He looks to me like a cracking get on with it and have fun type pony. I like him.
 
The one time I went to a welsh medal show I vowed never to repeat the experience. I have never come across so many badly behaved horses in one place, an utter disgrace. Handlers with bags on sticks, rattles, lunge whips waving.... It's a miracle my rather sensitive welsh A who has had a crappy life before I got him didn't turn himself inside out and kill us both. I think he was just shell shocked. We've been to Windsor and numerous county shows and I've never seen behaviour like it. I find we do better in mixed M&M classes rather than welsh, because in those classes rearing is actually penalised and mowing down competitors is not allowed! I felt in the pure welsh classes that my pony was penalised for 'not showing spirit' because I do not tolerate rearing and I try and prevent him jogging all the way round the ring.... He's just as fiesty as any welsh and can be a nightmare at times but funnily enough I try to prevent that in the ring...
Rant over :p. I would agree your welsh is a little narrow in front and a bit straight behind but I wish you all the best with him, I hope you have lots of fun together.
 
You should all come and show welsh ponies in Scotland then :D We have none of the nonsense that goes on down south! Yes the ponies are spirted and on their toes but but bad behaviour is not tollerated! A wee bit of jogging and bouncy walking is about as exciting as we get! Even the D's behave themselves!
