Hi everyone

Just wondering if there is such a thing?

My mare is in foal and wondered if there was a way of my watching her from my house (via tv perhaps or on my mobile) which is approx 1 mile down the road??

:D

oh yes, and it a wonderful way to waste a lot of time !

I am a techno idiot, but my yard owner put the camera in to watch the mare and we watched from 5 miles and 12 miles away respectively, and I was able to watch the horses when I was on holiday this year too, (Isle of Wight to the Midlands).

Some one else will have to tell you how ! but there is a box of tricks in the barn plugged into the power and then a camera in the relevant stable that can be controlled and rotated etc from home. Blooming fantastic.

Excellent

I have a gelding but id love to be able to check he was ok!

You will learn a lot about how he spends his time when you are not there.
I used the foaling camera for my gelding when he was poorly after being turned out following a long period of box rest. Being able to check every one or two hours is a godsend, it enables you to really monitor what is going on and give relevant reports to the vet rather than 'I think' reports.

You do need to watch the cost. I made the mistake of leaving it on and just refreshing the laptop screen - don't, it is expensive, make sure you turn the laptop on and off. I don't know how expensive because the yard owner would not tell me, but I fear it was very expensive.

The nicest aspect, apart from our foal of course, was when I was ill and confined to bed/home for 10 days earlier this year. My lovely friend moved the camera from the foaling yard into my lads box so I could watch him from my bed !

I've had IP cameras in stables for a few years now. Inexpensive to buy (about £120 each) but you do need broadband and power at yard. Can even dial in from phone so able to check on horses and yard 24/7. Work on infra red at night. I use YCam cameras but there are other similar available.

I have them in the foaling boxes and there is an aerial on the roof and the signal is then picked up by the aerial on the house roof. My neighbour over a mile away can pick it up on his tv and I have it on mine, just a matter of tuning it in. I had the original cost of purchase and putting it in but no additional costs, you need electricity where you install it. Mine is not fancy, black and white, but does the job, I had priced a couple of different ones and in the end went for calving cameras, same thing as foaling ones but cheaper.

Mine are in the back garden but i'd still love to be able to change channel on the TV and see them! I'd love to know how Oz makes such a mess of his stable every night!

The barn isn’t far from the owners house and I know she has broadband … the barn has many electricity points – do you think it would work? x

You might need to allow "ActiveX".
My stables have quite low roofs so camera doesn't quite get every corner - but enough to see if he's thrashing around on floor with colic. (I originally got them after his 1st colic surgery 6 years ago, to save midnight trips to yard - great to be able to see him from anywhere!)

You'd have to check on the spec of the IP camera and how amenable the owner would be to your suggestion. It all depends what her broadband deal is - unlimited or fixed cap. I don't know how much data IP cameras use.

we have a swann view system. I fitted it myself it we really simple. we can view horses from my phone app and it will send alerts and a picture if it is activated

zerotolerance - it wont let me log in :(

Just an update really, my YO has said I can use her spare bedroom when the foal is very near – her house is on the premises of where the barn is … she did say that years ago when they were expecting a foal someone came and put a CCTV camera up and they watching it from the house – Im assuming this is a lot easier than watching from my house – lol – she cant remember what they did/used (she’s quite old) anyone know what it could be?? x

I know - better not have a sneaky pee in there either, LOL

All done now, so he's going back in to probably dig it all up and roll in it. (He's on box rest by the way, so I'm not being mean keeping him in!)
