My horse was involved in an accident yesterday.
He sliced his offside hind just below the fetlock joint, cue a gallon of blood and emergency vet call out. Vet came out, said he had severed his common digital extensor tendon (I nearly fainted on hearing this! Tendon = bad news?)needed to be admitted for surgery to flush out the fetlock joint ASAP as joint fluid was leaking from the wound.
He had the joint X-Rayed straight away which showed no bony abnormalities. However they put him under GA not long after to flush out the wound. He had antibiotics administered straight to the wound and then had it all stitched up. He came round from the GA with no issues, which was great. The surgeon isnt worried about the tendon at all, saying the horse basically doesnt need it and it wont cause him any issues?? He is staying at the vets on IV antibiotics, vet said next 24-48 hours will be crucial to see if they have caught the infection early enough. If they havent they will have to reflush and so on and so on. Has anyone had any experience of this? Vet is confident horse can return to previous work (I showjump him), but he is seriously hopping lame and I am unsure.
