Has anyone had Cefquinome sulphate intramammary treatment prescribed for mud fever? I couldn't make the vet visit so the one of the girls on the yard supervised. Although I spoke to the vet on the phone afterwards and he said he had left antibiotic cream - I'm puzzled at what he has prescribed? Its apparently for treating respiratory tract infections in cattle.

I can't speak to him again until Monday.

All the info I can find on Cefquinome sulphate intramammary is about injections, what I understand from your post is that you have it in the form of a cream?

Pig oil and sulpher is a relatively commonplace treatment for mud fever, perhaps the sulphate in the treatment you have described is the veterinary equivalent?

That said I have no experience or knowledge of this treatment, if you are concerned perhaps you should call and chat to your vet (though that is difficult now its the weekend.)

I think what you've been prescribed is a tube of antibiotic 'paste/cream' that is licensed for use in treating mastitis in dairy cows (you put it up the teat canal so it goes into the udder to kill the bugs that cause mastitis!!!)

Its quite common for vets to prescribe these products for mud fever, some suggest mixing it with aqueous cream.

It'll probably do the job, and do it very well, but its not licensed, its just your vet using his or her experience on a suitable 'cure'!

ETA: Just re read your post and you mention respiratory disease.....the same drug is also available in an injection form for respiratory probs, the intramammary is obviously the tube for dairy cows!
