My horse is a fabulous, big strong heavy, but unlike most heavies, he has the mind of a racehorse! Makes him a terrific forward going hack, but also got us in loads of situations as I have basically ridden him for all these years with no brakes, when push comes to shove.
After getting royally (and dangerously) carted at a hunter trial a few weeks ago, on instructor's advice (and under instructor's supervision) we tried him in a Liverpool.
Enlisted the help of an ace friend today, to come out to some XC fields, and basically put us in all the situations I can't stop. I.e., cantering side by side, other horse going off in front. I had bloody brakes and it was awesome!!!
Also the brakes were so good, we then did some XC and he was absolutely fandabbydozy
he has so much scope and it was such a buzz to feel it!
Must add though, that this was by no means a quick fix - years and years of schooling went before, but I think we have finally got it! And I finally have the upper hand - when push came to shove, we both always knew he could tank off, and it was his evasion.
So a very happy bunny tonight
photos to follow too hopefully, the weather was DIRE but I think my instructor still managed to get some!!
