my horse has developed cellulitis from a cut on his hind leg. the vet treated him with antibiotics and anti inflams and he is no longer lame. The problem i have is the leg is covered in scabs like mud fever from the cellulis and cold hosing and is still swollen.i am trying to get the scabs off but its very sore by covering in cream to soften. Do you think the swelling is due to the cellulitis or the scaby leg and have you heard of pig oil and its results

The swelling and scabs are due to the lymphangitis, the Lymphatic fluid seeps out of the leg and the wounds where this happens form scabs which are much like the scabs seen in mudfever. Not advisable to put oilon them as you will block the infections in.

The best method i find is to use hibiscrub to soften and lift the scabs.

It is possible that the swelling will never go down and it will become normal..

Both of Teds legs are twice the normal size all of the time.

riding and turn out will pull the swelling down, but only to a certain point with ted. His legs always look huge.. so... you just sorta get used to the size and you know whats normal and whats not..

Best advice is as much turn out as possible and stable bandaging

My horses leg swelled up from the foot almost to his bum as one solid trunk. I used the hydrotherapy spa and his leg is now back to normal. Even though my vet told me it may never return to normal size.

In all seriousness I used it for a week on the horse and I have not had any swelling again, even when he has had to stay in for a couple of days. Nor do I bandage.

The epsom salts help to draw, the bubbles - massage, and the cold helps to reduce swelling.

This is really interesting my horse has just had antibiotics for Lymphangitis and now 2 weeks on one of her legs around the fetlock is still noticeably bigger, I wasn't told by my vet that it could stay bigger, H&H forum is so useful

There is no heat, no lameness, nothing other than it is bigger and her brushing boot doesn't fit as well that side!
Glad it didn't stay as big as it was when she started Antibiotics she had a treetrunk for a leg!

fair enough!! I was lucky and got him in straight away so thats probably why I had such a good result.
