My TB has a larger than normal hind leg due to previous injuries, whilst hes stabled he is normally bandaged to prevent further swelling. Last week he came in from the field and it was larger than normal, started hosing and it reduced slightly. As he had been changed onto haylage a day or 2 before I thought that maybe it didnt suit and that that was the cause, so he went back on his normal hay. However the leg didnt reduce, so the vet was called and is now on anti-b's (today is day 3). With walking round inhand and hosing the leg is starting to reduce back to what it was before, but each morning its back up again. There are no signs of cuts, thorns etc other than his old scars, so the vet says its probably cellulitis caused by a small prick or similar and because his leg is already vulnerable then he is going to be prone to this during the winter months. My question is this.......after hosing and walking when the leg is slightly reduced would bandaging again assist or not? If there is infection there I dont want to be forcing it into the bone by bandaging, but at the same time I want to give him relief. Keeping him out 24/7 is not an option unfortunately. Also and ideas on how to prevent these small nicks in the future in this soggy weather. It would be great to hear from others who have gone through the same. Thanks in advance

If the swelling is caused by an infection, the swelling will go up the leg if you bandage however the bandaging will help if it is not. Is there any heat now he is on the antibiotics? If not I would be tempted to try it but bandage fairly loosely on the first attempt just in case! Unfortunately, TBs have a skill for getting invisible nicks and then getting them infected!!
