My 20 year old, but low mileage and very fit, gelding came in from the field 6 weeks ago with a swollen leg (back of cannon/tendons). YO suspected a sting so treated accordingly, but horse became very depressed very quickly so vet came out. Vet's initial thoughts: tendon, just below knee. Leg was immobilised, onto antibiotics. 2 days later I took him in to vets for scans and x rays - nothing abnormal to see. He was put in a big splint-type bandage for another 10 days, more antibiotics.
When the bandage came off, he had a small pressure sore
behind knee and leg looked good, but quickly the swelling came back. We scanned again - still nothing and began a regime of hand walking and cold hosing. Following week, scanned again, still nothing so continued as before...
After a couple of weeks, the pressure sore was still there and had a friend - a similar lesion on the inside of the knee and a couple of other lesions on the fetlock, with no explicable cause.
Horse was on the verge of insanity by 4 weeks, so I've turned him out in small paddock building to bigger field with company and thankfully he's remained sensible. I'm now riding walk exercise as I stay on better than I stay upright when challenged (!) and he is mentally much better for it. Leg is still swollen, from knee (inside) to hoof, although quantity is reducing and it vanishes as soon as he is exercised - just walking to the mounting block can bring it right down to almost normal, but as soon as he stands (even for a chat with someone) it comes right back up again.
Official vet's opinion is 'don't know, probably cellulitis'.
Has anyone come across anything like this and any ideas what I should do with him? He's been off antibiotics for a couple of weeks now, I have him on global herbs' tendoneaze and lymphblend. Any ideas welcome! Thank you x
