It's inflammation of the subcutaneous layer of the skin - I think that's what the vet said. One of our ponies had a filled leg, probably due to infection creeping in via a small wound under her fetlock. The vet said it was cellulitis. Pony wasn't lame at all.....
I had it once! It is an infection of the base layers of the skin. I had it on my leg after my horse fell on me a crushed my leg between a stone and his body. It didn't break my leg luckily but damaged the muscles, nerves and skin. It cleared up with anti-biotics.
Have never seen it in a horse however but I would have thought it would need anti-biotic treatment as it is an infection.
One of teh few things that IMO warrants an emergency vet call out.
It is an infection, and requires antibiotics to cure it, if not treated the skin may split, then you are in a whole world of trouble. I've seen it in horses and humans - in horses vet advice was to turn out on bute and antibiotics and monitor closely, in humans a friend ended up hospitalised for a week with it, and they had to slice his arm from elbow to wrist to relieve the pressure.
It is usually caused by a puncture wound or small scratch - in the case of my friend a spider bite was suspected to be the culprit.
i had it - it was horrid horrid horrid and took lots of antib's to clear up. i've seen horses 10/10 lame with it too - lots of antib's and anti-inflam's.
My elderly cob had it last winter following from mud fever.
He was very lame and had intravenous injections, plus vet showed me how to give him intra-muscular antibiotics. His leg smelt as some of the pus was oozing out of the skin but he couldn't bear his leg to be touched. I made up a warm solution of hibiscrub and just gently poured it over the skin to cleanse it then melted some calendula cream and very gently applied it with a latex glove. He was on some anti-inflam. Once the antibiotics started to work and his leg was less painful I was able to cleanse it better. It took several months for him to heal and later the dead skin sloughed off in hard dry crusty lumps which I teased off as they came away. Left him with lovely pink healthy skin but I wouldn't want him to go through that again. Blamed myself for not checking his legs thoroughly as my attention is always focussed on my other accident proned horse. Now I give them both equal attention.
Is it something she will always get? Whenever she has an injury the vet always says she has cellulitus. Her body naturally over reacts to injuries.
She's had a week on anti biotics and double dose of bute, it's all cleared up now thankfully though!
Mmm, it can be serious, I had it following a riding accident and ended up in hospital for 4 days on a drip and my leg in a cast... took 2 months to walk again and am still having problems 18 months on. And yes apparently once you've had it you are always more susceptible. So I imagine its similar for horses.
Of course thats worst case scenario - it can just be a simple infection that goes with antibiotics.
Baron got in a few months ago due to an infection in a cut. He was very very lame and his leg was red hot and he would not let me near it. Went with antibiotics and anti infamotory. It is and infection of the muscle tissue I think. I have read that once they get it it can reoccur. Baron has been fine since he got it though.
His was a mild case and caught early, it can be serious though.
Picture the day after the vet came out. You can see the cut which has actually healed, obviously it had healed and infection in and his leg did not swell until 8 days after the cut. It literally swelled to twice its size overnight.
